Refrigerator replacement

Is it better to replace the cooling unit on a 15 year old dometic or just buy a new fridge?

I would buy a new fridge. And would not be gas. A new residential is in our future. More storage better cooling control and a much cheaper to run unit.

aden, what size fridge do you have now? If it helps, here is my thread on Dometic Fridge Replacement with Residential Whirlpool. I will never own a propane fridge again...it's SOOOOOO much better with a residential unit.

"aden".....What size refer are you talking about? You need to provide more info. If it's a 6 or 8 cubic foot, you'd be better off to buy a new one. If you're talking 12 cubic feet or larger, you might want to go a residential unit.

Personally I love the option of propane for my fridge and would never even consider a residential unit....

Search shows new unit available in the $1100 - $1300 range. Probably the best option based on your boondocking.

I've been going through a similar process, Fix or replace.. I have a RM 3862. Its almost 20 years old. It works on AC but not propane. I decided to spend $100 and buy a Dinosaur board to fix it. All the shelves and seals are in good shape, However, If the cooling unit takes a dump, this is what I came up with...

A new frig will run about $1200. A cooling unit will cost $600.

For the additional $600, I get new control board, new gaskets, new shelves, new doors, etc, etc. I'd probably go for the new frig vs a cooling unit.

I also looked at a residential replacement option. I'm still up in there air about this. I have a reasonably good definition on how we use our MH. Although the Dometic works a little better for us, either option would fit.. However, having the Dometic opens up more use options than a residential.

Take it out and turn it upside down for 24 hours the turn it back. If you can hear liquid moving your still good. Wait another 24 and turn it on. Sometimes they sit too long and the water separates in the coils and blocks the flow. If you have smelled or seen ammonia you'll need a new coil pack.

Worked for me saver over $2k

Taking out and turning upside down is an option, but I leave it on all the time so it hasn't been off, it doesn't cool on gas or AC.

I am leaning toward a residential fridge, our dry camping is usually done tailgating, so we run the genny regular when off grid,

I replaced a cooling unit with the Amish built on my Dometic. I love the electric/gas option but if it ever fails again, it will be replaced with a residential.
