Refrigerator usage
My spouse purchased a lot of food that needs to be refrigerated, more than our home refrigerator can hold so the question is which is more efficient, running the RV refrigerator on propane or electricity. This is a Norcold refrigerator in a 2007 class C and not state of the art.

strictly anecdotal but we always found the frig performed better on LP but it was never great performance no matter the energy source. that's why we now have a residential fridge. to me it was a matter of consumables. I was loathe to run the fridge on LP when electric was available.

I've always run it on electric when at RV parks. I did install a residential refrigerator in my previous motorhome (a largish diesel pusher) and that was a great change. This unit seems to work very well on both propane and shore power. Thinking about it I'm thinking this one is a Dometic not a Norcold.

I would run on electricity to eliminate having to drive around to fill the propane.

Most side by side rv fridge are nearly 500 watts when the thermal heater if going , but then there is the trouble of filling but they don't burn a lot of propane .Id say a wash if your looking to run it week .They can take 6 hrs or longer to start getting cold so you may want to put a bag of ice in a pan to catch water or just move veggies and condiments to rv . And make sure rv is good and level for safe fridge operation.

Use it on 120 VAC. There's not enough difference to worry about having to refill propane.

Great.....just out of curiosity how do those refrigerators know what the local costs of electricity are in a given location......or the going price of propane for that matter????

We have a residential refrigerator now, but when we had an RV gas-electric, we ran on electric all the time in the "auto" position in the event of power failure, gas would kick on. We've always had all of our campers plugged in at home 24x7x365. Use electric. Save your gas.
