Resealing seams on EPDM roof previously coated with roll/brush on coating

New-to-us 1999 bounder appears to have been stored under cover most of its life. A few seams need repair with product like dicor lap sealant. I have done this repair in the past and it went pretty straight forward by using heat from a heat gun and gently removing old lap sealant with a putty knife. However, this roof looks to have a rolled on/brushed on what coating painted on top of the EPDM roof. My question is should the repairs be the same as an uncoated roof, or is there something that I should be aware of? Thanks in advance.

The issue you may run into is the Dicor not being compatible with the product you currently have. I tried to use Dicor over Proflex (fiberglass roof) and it would not stick.
Try a small section and see how well it adheres. If it won't stick you will either have to figure out what they used or strip it off and start over.

Any idea on how to get the roof sealant product off the original EPDM roof material? I don't want to use any improper products...petroleum distillates, etc.

I think you are going to have to do some research and try to figure out what was used and contact them. You could just check with a few different vendors of that type of product and see if their removal recommendations are similar.

This isn't rocket science, so I would just experiment. Prep the old seam sealant as you normally would and try the Dicor in one place. It's compatible with a wide range of stuff, though not everything. If it sticks well and stays stuck for several days, you are good to go. If not, try a non-EPDM product such as Proflex RV.

You need not worry much about petroleum products on the roof coatings. The risk with petroleum distillate is the the EPDM rubber fabric is porous to petroleum. If used more than sparingly, it can leak through and loosen the glue underneath. The paint-on coatings are not fabric or porous ad not held on with an adhesive, so not so susceptible.
