I have a 35’ 2007 Dutchmen Super C motorhome on a Kodiak chassis with 44,000 miles on the ODO. Not long after I purchased the motorhome used (17,000 miles on ODO) in 2013 a bubble developed in the filon on the portion that covers the overhang above the passenger side door. Then about 3 or 4 inches of the bottom of the filon popped out of the trim molding in one location. This is the molding at the bottom of the sidewall on the portion of the motorhome that extends over the cab of the truck. The molding is held in place with screws that are covered by a vinyl cap trim piece. I was able to pop the filon back in behind the trim molding, but it was obvious that not much of the bottom of the filon was covered by the trim molding.
Last year while driving the motorhome, the vinyl cap started coming out of the trim molding at the bottom of the passenger-side overhang. I tried inserting the vinyl cap back into the trim molding, but it would not stay; it was stretched too tight like it wasn’t long enough. Then I noticed that it appeared that the trim molding had dropped down a little so that it was no longer covering the edge of the filon.
Further investigation revealed that the luan backing was not bonded to the filon and the backing appeared to be delaminated.
I removed the vinyl cap trim piece and then removed the screws and the molding. Without removing the filon, I removed as much of the delaminated luan as I could and applied as much adhesive as I could under the filon. I figured the screws had loosened and allowed the molding to drop down so that when reinstalled the molding could be drawn back up over the filon. This was not the case; after purchasing new screws (the old ones were quite rusty) and tightening them, the molding was in the same position below the bottom edge of the filon.
Does anyone have an idea as to why the molding appears to have dropped down below the bottom of the filon? Is it possible the overhang is sagging even though it is not obvious? And if it is sagging, any idea how I can fix it?
