To the OP, if you have a process that works for you, why change now?
We usually leave our tank hoses hooked up and both valves left opened. This has worked good for us in 6+ years full timing contrary to popular opinions.
The gray/black tank system is pretty robust and they are used successfully many different ways.

I don't hook up to anything but power for maybe the first 4 days - my fresh tank is full when I arrive (105 gal) and my B&G (50 gals each) tanks are empty.
If I leave for home after 5 days I just dump at my home in the cleanout which is beside the coach parking.
As mentioned, if you have a system that works, go for it.

When we leave, I dump the tanks. If I add anything, it is 3-5 gallons of hot water, Pine Sol and maybe a cup of Dawn, and that is only if we have had an odor.

I agree with grindstone,, if what you're doing is working, then keep doing it...
With ours, I dump when leaving the campground. I have never added any water or chemicals to the tank afterwards and have never had one iota of trouble with the plumbing.

I agree with those that suggest adding water after dumping which will keep anything left behind from drying out and hardening. I've now added a small amount of water to ours and prior to our next trip, will dump a bag of ice in there to dislodge whatever might have stuck in place.

Don't think one ever gets rid of all the "stuff" in the black tank by dumping and filling no matter how many time we do it.
Had an RV with white polyethylene tank that I could see down into. Was always surprised at the amount of "stuff" that would come out (I could see it) after dump and filling 3 times and then using a custom wand that i built with one high pressure jet. LOTS of stuff left behind by just dumping and filling.

I think the ice solution would help if you only used a small amount of water (1-5 gallons) and allowed the ice to slide around the bottom in a large tank. (maybe even add some soap)
The video showed a 1/2 full small tank where the ice was trapped from moving in a pickup truck with a suspension designed for ride comfort. A trailer is a different ride experience, not soft like a truck.

I've always have been afraid of traveling with full tanks after reading about people who have had their whole tank break loose and drop

I agree when it comes to a waste tank that might hold 80 gallons (600 lbs+) that is hanging from the bottom of a RV held on by a few screws.
I always start out with an empty black tank and then add 3-5 gallons of water to slosh around, along with 2 dish soap packets flushed down the toilet. Upon arrival, I will again dump the black tank and use the internal rinse until the water comes out clear. This is how I keep my tanks clean after using sewer hookup and leaving the waste valves open during our stays.

It's pretty obvious a lot of different practices will work.
I would hesitate to dump if not at least half full. I like to "mix things up" driving and dump when arriving. Or dump fill half or more w fresh and dump when arriving.
I think a big key to deciding is whether you have and use a built in rinse line.

I'm talking about less than an inch of water in the tank, just enough to keep whatever is on the bottom wet. If I had more of a concern I'd use a wand to blast the stuff loose.

How you like to dump and rinse your tanks has a lot to do with how you camp, the capacity of your tanks and the systems that you have. Even your age is and physical ability is a factor. Here's why......
I have a bad back and a full wall slide. When I park at a campsite, I don't want to have to crawl under that slide to connect water or sewer. We also have a dishwasher, washer and dryer and unlimited hot water (longer showers), which use and drain a lot of water.
When we arrive at any campsite, even overnight, I connect the power, water and sewer while the slide is in. I use a SaniCon, so all my connections are easily made in under five minutes.
Our coach has two macerator toilets and a 40 gallon back water tank, consequently, it fills quickly (macerator toilets use more water). Our system also alerts us when the tanks are 3/4 full (yellow light on toilet) and the toilets quit flushing when the tank is full (red light). I have my coach set up so I can dump my black tank electrically from inside the coach. The SaniCon uses a grey water bypass, so grey water is always draining.
Since we're always connected, I never have to worry about using too much water during a shower, washing some clothes at the last minute or doing the dishes. My coach also has an automatic tank fill for the main water tank.
Since we have macerator toilets and the SaniCon hose does NOT need to be rinsed, I rarely rinse my tanks, maybe a couple of times a year. We use our toilet while driving and leave what ever is in the tank there until the next trip and then dump when at the campsite as needed.
Our coach has a lot of convenient features and we use them. I know some get really nutty about cleaning and flushing their tanks. We've been RVing for 45 years and have never had an issue with plugged or clogged tanks. During the high heat times, I add a little Happy Camper and all is well.

As winemaker said I like to dump right after driving so everything is stirred up if possible. If the tank is too full I will dump and add some water and dish soap to dump next time.
