Remember most of the people who die in a hurricane die from drowning !!! Most of them live in low lying areas and the flooding catches them. In Florida or any other areas you and never tell how deep a flooded street is.

I have three houses to make sure they are OK after the storm and have family here to watch out for. My RV is in a large storage lot with other RVs and boats. Even after IRMA it was 3' above the closest water in the ditch behind it.

If you watch the weather guys on TV during a storm they love to show the worst of any storm on TV. One thing about a Hurricane is you get days of warnings to get prepared for it. Not so true for earthquakes, tornadoes even blizards don't have this much warnings. The longer people live in Florida, learn that a Hurricane is part of living here. Both of my neighbors that left the state for IRMA are staying this time, one said he spent 20hrs trying to get back home with two teenagers in a car won't happen again !!!

Based on the direction of this storm (it is still early), I would head to I-10 and go west into Alabama. There are numerous cheap/friendly campgrounds prior to getting to New Orleans. Find a site and stay put. If this one decides to get into the gulf and come north to the gulf coast you will have plenty of time to head north.
Seems the best advice I have seen at this point in time

Have you left yet? Waiting until the last moment is a day too late.

Why would the OP leave at this point? The storm isn't even coming ashore here in Florida.

the only thing predictable about a hurricane is its unpredictability.

Sooo you're completely ignoring the NOAA forecasts that are updated every 3 hours? Seems that was the strategy of quite a few people in Louisiana back in 2005.

If the storm is predicted to head your way make preparations to either leave or ride the storm out. If the storm is not predicted to head your way make preparations to stay with a plan B in case things change.

Lesson Learned

We did have plans ahead of time to evacuate, the CG we were going to stay at called 9AM to ask if we were still coming, we said we were on our way. 2 hours later we pulled in and the MH in front of us asked if we were going to check in as it didn’t look to promising. When I got to the desk the attendant says they r 99% sure they will lose power and 90% of the residents have already left. Why the heck she didn’t tell me this when she called in AM. 3 hours and 5 CG later we found a safe place to stay.

Everyone suggested Alabama. Our glorious leader said Dorion was going to hit Alabama.

This was a really weird storm - I've never seen one just stop for 36 hours.

I suggested my Sister and BIL head to North Alabama to be safe, my BIL said 'What?" and headed to a CG in Riverview FL. It worked this time as we dodged a bullet. Hope he'll listen next time for my sister's sake - it's only diesel fuel. It's a big difference being in a block home compared to a 5er. They just sold their S&B and are full timing in their 5er.

We sat still at Lake Wales and waited, knowing we could sprint if needed. It wasn't a fun weekend and maybe next time we can just take a little vacation for a week or so.
