Slide Toppers

I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas how to quiet the wind noise of the slide Toppers in heavy wind to keep them from hitting the top of the slider to stop some of the noise. Last night the wind was blowing about 30 miles per hour and was directly at the rear of my motorhome and the toppers were banging all night.

Hello Bob, I have read on here where some have went to a hardware store and got nylon rope, enough to go around the entire slide, up over the topper and tied the rope together at the bottom, tight enough to keep a little tension on the topper so it can't flap/sail.

I looked up what a 2008 Winnebago 39W coach had for sides and it looks like the slide you are referring to is very long.

https://www.rvtrader.com/dealers/Ant...-39W-120132559

Your best solution is to run the slide in while in very winding conditions. Or one possibility is to place an inflated balloon in the bedroom end of the slide between the topper and the top of the slide. If it doesn't get removed when you bring in the slide it will just burst when the slide comes in.

If you run a strap over the top like palehorse suggested then if it rains you will have tons of water collected on the topper which is not good either.

Anxious to see what other have to say.

I was just thinking the same thing. Maybe my awing clamps and tying them down..

Give it a try..........the rope is cheap enough for a test.......
As far a water pooling up that Richard mentioned(He is correct), I have also read that some use the same method on their toppers that sag and hold water, the rope acts like a wick/travel path for the water, and it follows the rope off...........and holds both ends of the topper down a little in the center, for run off.
I tried it once, did not work for me............now the rope is in the basement, maybe for windy conditions for the topper.

I gave up trying those solutions. Best thing for me was to be happy knowing what was banging. We are use to it now so hardly notice it.

If it's a really damaging wind, I bring the slide in. If it's an annoying wind with gusts and occasional flapping, I've gone up and stuffed a towel or other object at the end where the wind is entering. I know some use inflatable beach toys to block the end and the flapping.

Since you know what size you need to fill the opening, buy something that is easy to store and place. Even a piece of foam (rolled tube for exercising your back) cut to length with something added to it to grab it from the ground with grippers.

While tying a rope around the entire system could work, there's MAYBE some things to think about.

1. Depending on the actual condition of the topper, if the tension on the rope is "possibly" too tight, it's possible that either a tear could result in the edges or near the last point of support (near the roller or, the groove area where the topper sits inside the groove at the outer edge). And or, again, depending on the condition of the system, the strain of the rope could put additional strain on the sun-baked thread for the outer seams which, could give way.

This is all just speculation and most likely would NOT happen. As for the "Pooling" of rain during the use of the rope, based on the the way it would work against the topper, the edges would taper down due to the strain of the rope and, the center would remain high. That would result, TO ME, in an ARC effect and therefore, any rain encountered would or, should simply roll off. But, what do I know? Since I've not tried this theory, I don't know if my thoughts are correct or not.

But, for the OP, We've had the same exact situation quite a few times. What I did was put large pieces of wood on top of the topper, one on each side. That quelled the flapping and, if I forgot to remove them prior to bringing in the slide, they would simply roll off the edge. We never experienced any damage due to this action. Just a thought. If you put something like a Balloon inside the topper, that would work and, if you brought the slide in without removing the balloons, nothing would happen other than you'd pop them.

I use 3" web strapping with buckles on each end - depending on wind angle, over 35 knots I retract the windward slide ...

I finally tried them this summer.......did not work for me. When 2 were in place, when/if the wind blew during a rain storm, the topper unwound enough against the topper springs and lifted the topper, and the wind blew the inflatable's out of the slide ........happened a couple of times......gave up.

If a balloon does not work for you try a beach ball however you will have to remember to REMOVE it before running the slide in otherwise you will damage the slide.

The purpose of the balloon or beach ball is to remove any slack in the topper. If the balloon or beach ball are not large enough to accomplish this then get a larger one.
