Can't believe all the RV's I saw laying on their sides. Did people not try to take them to a safer area? Friend says they were left there for the insurance payout. I doubt that.

Sunshine Key sells annual and summer program sites which results in lots of Miami area folks leaving their RV down there and driving back & forth for weekends & longer. The Miami & southeast Florida folks thought that their homes were going to take the big hit and the lower Keys were going to be missed. By the time the path shifted to the Keys & the west coast it was really too late to make the trip. They chose to spend their time & energy on their homes. This is the first Oct in 5 years we haven't been scheduled to go to Sunshine Key.

There was no safer area in this storm. My one buddy did move his fiver to a storage facility on Big Pine off Industrial and the carnage there is just as bad.

Many of the people on Sunshine own the fiver but don't even have a vehicle to tow it. They leave it down there all year and just drive down in the car for winter.

It could also be a choice of save the family, or the house or the RV, but not enough time or money to do them all.
In many cases I'd expect the family and house to win.
We simply don't have enough information to be second guessing why anyone did what they did and/or claiming that they did it wrong.
