Surge Guard

Hi,

Newbee question. My RV has a hard wired Surge Guard. the read out displays the voltage on each line, that's it. Do I need one of those that are plugged into the pedestal to check for low voltage etc.? Or do I just let the on board one do its thing? Thanks.

What model Surge Guard do you have. The instruction sheet should tell you what functions, the unit covers.

most likely if it is displaying voltage on each line it is also monitoring each line and will cut power if it gets too low or high. but get the specific model number and go on-line to get the manual. then you will know for sure.

it is a Surge Guard 40250-RVC It says it has the protections built in. So it appears that I am covered. My concern was the protection is at the end of the cord in the coach vs at the beginning of the cord outside the coach. I was thinking its better to check the source prior to plugging in vs plugging in and then plugging in.

I am going to trust the installed system.

If you wear both suspenders and a belt, you will probably be happier with both pedestal and permanently installed surge guard.

I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead!

That's an automatic transfer switch with built-in power protection!

As Joe said, that's an ATS with some protection built in. Adding an EMS like the Progressive Industries at the pedestal or hard wired in front of the ATS will just add an extra layer of protection. Think of it as a first line of defense. I have a hard wired HW50C in front of my ATS and it shows line voltage before the ATS kicks in. If it detects low or miswired power it will not allow it to pass.

it says it protects against the following. Sounds like personal preference weather to add additional protection at the pedestal.
  • Multi-mode surge suppression (fuse protected)
  • Low (<95V) and High (>132V) Voltage
  • Mis-wired pedestal
  • Open neutral
  • Open ground
  • Reverse polarity
  • High and low frequency
  • Transfers to generator power automatically when energized after 30 second delay in generator mode.
  • When both shore power and generator power are available, generator dominates after a 20-30 second delay.
  • When generator is shut down, shore power activates after a 3-4 second delay.
  • 65A, FLA full-rated contactor mounted on vibration isolators to ensure quiet operation..
  • UL Approved ATS - full transfer switch rating, UL1008.
  • 3350 Joules of power surge protection.

The only thing to be gained by adding a portable unit at the pedestal is a very slight protection for your power cord. It is a total waste of your money to do that. In fact, many RV folks prefer the type unit that you have since it is out of site and immune to theft as well as providing protection whey you use the onboard generator.

One thing to keep in mind is that you should carefully read and follow the operating instructions to avoid damage to the unit.

Thanks Kirk. I was thinking the same thing about unnecessary.
