Not only do these protect you from voltage spikes.surges caused by lighting , etc., but they also protect against a multitude of other kinds of faults such as loss of ground connection or neutral wire connection at the pedestal, errors in the AC frequency that deviate substantially from the standard 60 Hz, and also high and low voltage, all of which can cause severe safety issues along with damage to equipment.
