Thetford Toilet Ball Seal...
Anyone know if you can replace the ball seal without removing the toilet. Seems I read somewhere that you can. Have purchased new seal kit but instructions are poorly written and inconclusive. Thanks....

The ball seal is sandwiched between the top and bottom halves of the toilet. While it might be possible to remove the top half and leave the base on the floor flange, it usually requires a, "Step one - Remove toilet."
Since you bought the seal already, you might as well 'dive in.'
However many have just lubricated the seal to restore it's water holding properties.

I agree with Bob, before removing the toilet, I would put on my rubber glove with a little petroleum jelly, and wipe the seal clean while applying the lube. I actually do this about once per year as part of my routine maintenance.

Depends on how yours made. I just changed seal on Aquamagic Style II and yes you could BUT. I think in the end removing the whole thing was easier and faster. Removing the two long bolts in the rear would be a real challenge with ours installed in a corner. Additionally I can see the rubber floor gasket needing to be replaced. If it fails you could have real problems.

Take out the toilet. Thetfords are quite simple to remove and disassemble and quite frankly trying to replace the seal without removing the unit and turning it over would be pure torture for yourself. Two half inch nuts and a hand-tighten-only water connection and its out.

I always remove them, much easier to work on while sitting on a table than while rolling around on the floor. As others have said, it is very easy to remove them.

I've seen more than one toilet torn apart on a picnic table...
