Tire Valve Stem Extensions

Figured I would ask since the black cloud followed....

I have a Class C , 16" Duals. Phoniex Simulators.

I added the Simulators this year.. Prior to this and my last RV, 14 years without extentions and NO issues LOL..

The inner/ long extensions are the steel braided kit and the outers are flexible rubber style that previous owner had new ..

I ran PA to NC couple weeks ago, ALL OK.. and couple local trips prior.. Junior headed deep into the western side of Ohio from PA.. 22 miles from destination (470 down) he felt swaying and noticed LT outside low.. he limped with trailer in tow to destination. Looked at it. pulled it and said the extension twisted or rubbed and loosened,, He filled it , checked inside.. and no leaks..
This was his first time using RV without ME
On way back first gas Stop.. he checked , LT side OK.. at 77/80..
Rt side Inner 30... urgh,, He filled to 80.....
He called said he was in PA got gas and was 170ish miles out (longer back to my home).. Filled it AGAIN,, .. HE moved some weight around in Trailer and also RV , dumped fresh water... to help , incase..
He got to my place a bit over 510 miles on trip and the Inside was dead flat,, he took his time last 45-50 miles as he noticed the RT outer squatting ..

Same thing it was loose on the stem.. I just pulled it and looked..
Tire is toast, he made it on the other one low out there so, I not happy using that tire any more.. both low mile Michelins 5th year (15000 or so)

SO WHAT is everyone using.. ???
ALSO what Valve stems,, Metal pull thru or Metal bolt ins??

THANKS in advance

On my duals, when I had balance beads put in last year, my tire shop put in new brass valve stems and they bent the inner one so I could just push the air hose on straight.
I've always viewed those extensions as another leak point.

Flexible rubber extenders?
Seems like rubber would be flopping around.

A one piece long valve stem is the only reliable way to go. Of course the inside dual tire has to be dismounted to install it.

You now have to be concerned about the reliability of ALL your duals having sidewall stress and/or tread delamination. With one air'd up at normal pressure and it's mate down at 30 psi or flat, both tires will be running very hot. If you don't take care of this now, next year(maybe this year) on a hot long run 1 of 4 will blow out, then another one later, etc.

Many years ago our families camped right on the sand at Pismo Beach. To get a few miles down the beach we had to air down the tire to 20-30 psi for a great deal of additional traction. My brother forgot to air up his pretty new 32 ft class A mh. About 30 miles down the hwy the first inner dual blew out and took out his black tank plumbing. A year later another blow out, a year later another blow out. You don't want to experience this scenario.
Good luck,
Bill

Going to look into the bolt in style, if I can fins GOOD ones.. I was told be carefull the rubber seals go in the "online" versions.. I would like to find the older brass style etc. My tire supplier is checking at his stores....

I already picked out 4 tires..
The one on Left Outer is now a 2 time looser as it was a donor from old RV set, It was month old after a blow out and I kept it, being the same as the new one. but was run "stressed for 90 miles. blah Blah
I have one local 150 mile trip for an offroad scoring job (my side gig) , I have another 2 good tires to toss in, to get me out and back, it is only a few miles of highway and back roads, if I have too..

I change these myself, I have machine and balancer at shop, just stems and Time.. life has me by the short hairs as they say..

On my class A, outside rear, and fronts have solid metal extenders. Inside rears have steel mesh ones. Have been on for 7 years now with no issues.

You want solid valve stems all around. Dually Valve is the brand many folks use, me included (2x). I think they are manufactured by Borg.

Solid metal extensions, with rubber donut stabilizer in the wheel hole to keep the extension from flexing w/ tire rotation. Straight foot air chuck & gauge. 20 years on mine.

These seem to be the default option, and are what I have. Very pleased with the quality. Do note that you'll need to have them installed by a tire shop. My Ford dealer did it for me, and it wasn't expensive at all.

I've been using the Borg dually valves for a few years now. No problems at all and with a TPMS keeping me informed about tire pressures I've only had to add air to the tires about twice a year - saves a lot of hassle vs. checking pressures with a tire gauge. Don't try to use a TPMS with rubber valve stems or flexible extensions. If you call or email yourtireshopsupply.com they'll send you a list of recommended installers in your area. The torque spec is fairly low and a lot of inexperienced installers tend to overtighten them.
