Unlocking gas springs that help raise bed

I have a 2006 Jayco Seneca HD that I had to remove one end of the gas springs that help to raise the bed to get to storage underneath when I was working on the bedframe. These springs were very helpful in that once the bed was raised they held it up without my help and then would allow me to easily just push the bed back down into place. The issue is that once I removed one end of them, they seem to have locked in the open state and I can't find a way to get them to close again. I've looked for switches and locking mechanisms, but there doesn't appear to be any.

Anyone have an idea on how to get these gas springs working again? They never latched before, even when the bed was fully raised to the max extension of the springs.

Normal gas springs do not lock, but when not attached you have to overcome the gas pressure to move the piston. Try hooking them back to the bed and they should operate normally. (psi rating is marked on the strut)
I have 80psi struts on my cargo doors, very difficult to move when not attached..
Of course it may be possible for a strut to fail- locked open....Usually I have replaced mine for the opposite problem, no longer hold the door open.

Hmmm, I'll give that a try. But when I install just one, the bed doesn't go down on its own as I'd have expected it to. But they are easy to put on so I'll install them both and see if I can lower the bed like in the past. Wouldn't be the first time that everything was fine and I thought I had a problem
