Water in my gas tank.

A little spooky episode with water in my gas tank after filing up at a couple Flying J's in Carlsbad, NM. Engine ran rough afterwards. Put 2 bottles of "Heet" in the tank and it fixed the problem. The instructions say one bottle per 20 gallons of gas. We have a 60 gallon tank. Ya' never know...

HEET is nothing more than 95% isopropyl alcohol. Water and alcohol mix, so do gas and alcohol. So while it doesn't do so efficiently, it will run through the fuel system and burn.

One thing about using HEET to disperse water is as it cools off, the HEET water mix forms a jelly. Make sure you change your fuel filter as soon as possible, as they will catch this stuff that might pass through fuel lines but not a filter.

PS:we don't have that problem in Minnesota where all gas has 10% alcohol in it. Except for Non-oxygenated that is spendy.

EDIT... Near same reply was being typed as I was .

Glad it helped. Most gas is already 10% alcohol, like heat is made of and will keep water molecularly in suspension. Your fuel sock and filter may have been wet with the water and blocking gas flow ,the extra alcohol may have broke down the water .
If the station was hitting dredge at the bottom of tank or stirred up right after filling you may want to change your fuel filter soon.

I haul gas and it is not possible to get a bunch of water from filling up at certain stations. Any gasoline with ethanol will mix with any water in the tank and never will separate. If we see any water in the tanks before dumping new gas into the tank we will not do so. Once gas and water mix the tank has to be pumped out. This gas is not like in the old days when water and gas would separate.

Ethanol gas will absorb moisture from the air. Also there is a 30 day shelf life of ethanol gas.

Did you actually see water in your filters?
