When to retract a manual awning
Hi folks,
Does anyone retract their manual awning
at night or when away for a while? If so is it always or only over a certain forecasted wind speed?
Also if in camp at what wind speed would you retract it?

Depends on how it's anchored and if you are using de-flappers...they can take quite a blow when secured properly.

I just ordered some de flappers. The awning has an arm coming from the side of the coach.

If strong gusty winds are predicted, I pull it in.
If I leave it out unattended, I generally lower it so its a sharper angle pointing down instead of straight out.

I always bring ours in at night and if we will be away from the MH. Don't know about a particular wind speed, but if it starts bouncing at all, I bring it in.

Same here--- seen too many awnings in pieces when people have left and the weather changed.

I've owned three manual awnings and one automatic. It is no question the manual awnings with the arms that attach to the rig are more sturdy. In fact, I wish my current rig had a manual awning.
Generally, if you deploy the awning, lower one end so that it sheds water and secure both ends to the ground with straps and tent stakes, it will handle a fair amount of wind. However, they all have their limit and can be damaged by really strong wind gusts. Our general rule when we had manual awnings was to put them away if we were going to be away from the rig for longer periods, especially during times or places when storms could blow up quickly.

I and my friends used to leave our awnings out, some with "hurricane " straps, some without. That's until last Fall when a storm blew up and destroyed 2 awnings as well as 2 10X10 sun shades. I think we will be a little hesitant about leaving them out now. Fortunately mine is an electric awning, so it went in quickly.

Ours is a manual awning, and I'm in the 'it depends' group.
We're in Florida where the next rain is always on the way, especially in the summer. Sometimes it's just a nice shower, sometimes it's a 30 minute 'storm'.
If we're in what I feel is a protected area (for us that's usually in a park with lots of trees) then I'll leave it out unless heavy weather is forecast.
For those times where we're camped right on the beach with no protection from the wind I'll stake the awning when we're there, and bring it in when we leave or go to bed.
It's a bit of extra work, but to me that's better than some day coming back to a shredded awning and/or damaged RV and thinking "I saved myself 5 minutes of work, but now I have to deal with THIS".

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the replaces.
We won't have our coach since July and only have to bring it in once so far due to bad weather.
I am asking here as my wife thinks I am paranoid when I say we should bring it in :-)

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you can't also be right.

Remember too that even though you can secure the hardware, strong wind can destroy the fabric. We saw one at our lake home where the RV owner strapped and staked his awning to the ground and left. A strong storm blew up and ripped the vinyl fabric completely off the RV rail. The hardware was fine but the fabric was destroyed.

I could definitely see that happening.
