2005 Grand Cherokee tow vehicle question

Recently began towing an '05 GC Limited. Problem was the battery would drain while being towed. A dealer installed a "charging wire" when he wired the coach, but it still did it.

I realize when the key is in the unlocked position there is current somewhere, unlike my previous 2001 Cherokee Sport. What I do is turn the key completely off and I have no issue. My question pertains to this. It does not seem to me like my steering locks in the off position like I expected it to. I have been keeping a close eye on my tires and the Jeep tracks when I turn. I guess I'm just wondering if this is normal, or if anyone else has experienced this.
Thanks in advance.

The lock position of the steering is probably with the wheel 180 degrees from straight ahead. The newer columns only lock in one ( stronger ) place compared to the multiple spots, of the vehicles when the locks were introduced. As the chipped keys came into favor the manufactures started leaving the column locks off .
About the only true test of the column lock is to raise the front end of the Jeep and rotate the steering wheel ; from full left to full right with the key off; to see where the locking up happens.

Charge wire should stay ahead of any draw ? Have you checked the voltage at the Jeep battery , hooked up with the coach running, If the dealer wired it with a fuse , ( the correct way ) the fuse may be blown.

I tow an 07 jeep GC. Starting in 2005 they did away with the steering lock. Your owners manual should tell to remove key from switch when towing.

Thank you for the responses! You have confirmed what I suspected. If I continue to have a battery drain problem, I know where to come for help!
