2008 Jeep Liberty toad questions

Bought an 08 Liberty 4x4 today to use as a toad. As I understand it, the manual says to leave the ignition switch in the on/unlocked position, and disconnect the negative battery cable. I plan to remove the steering lock to eliminate that step and leaving the key in it. Will that affect anything else? And what is the reasoning to disconnect the negative cable?

I ordered a blue ox baseplate, direct connect wiring harness for lights, break away cable set up, and will be using a ready brake cable set up for braking.

My toad requires key on ; to unlock the steering column , battery negative cable removed .

With the key on , IF , the battery isn't disconnected the speedo and odometer are active ( miles roll up ) and all other electronics draw power .
Battery drained in 3/4 hours.

Well, just figured out that mine doesn’t have a steering lock. Apparently none of the automatic models do. So I don’t see why I need to leave the key in the off/unlocked position. If the key is completely off and out, can’t be drawing any power either. I’ll find out if the speedometer rolls or not once the baseplate arrives.

Yes, they didn’t get the ignition lock. So no need to leave the key in the ignition or disconnect the battery.

When in doubt, Read The Fine Manual. In this case, the 2008 Liberty owner manual under Recreational towing (pg 378). It gives step by step instructions.

Don't you have to have the key in and on to move the shifter to neutral?

Yes. But once you’re hooked up and in neutral, you can remove the key and go.

I got the base plate installed a little while ago. Break away cable will be here tomorrow, along with the ready brake cable, and the wiring harness for lights. Will be nice to have a toad now for trips.

You need to go back to your owners manual and reread how to set your Liberty for flat towing pp378 towing behind motorhome. After setting up to tow the shift lever MUST be in park. for automatic transmissions. 4th gear for manual transmissions.

I know what the manual says. My statement above was not meant to imply you can tow with trans in neutral. Forum doesn’t have an edit or delete option……
