2012 Jeep Wrangler question
I have recently set up my Jeep to tow 4 down using a Cool Tech wiring harness and a Road Master tow bar and have yet to try it out. The Cool Tech harness kit came with a battery disconnect and upon reading the owners manual, Jeep says to put the ignition in Acc and to disconnect the battery. Since the steering wheel doesn't lock, why can't you just turn the key completely off and remove the key? Am I missing something? If I disconnect the battery, I will have to run a power outlet to the battery in order to power my Brake Buddy. Thanks.

My manual says to leave key in ACC, disconnect battery, transfer in neutral, and transmission in park. That's what's confusing to me.

Go to this site Jeep Owners | Download an Owners Manual 2004 - 2011 | Jeep and check the owner's manual and user guide under Recreational Towing (Behind motorhome, etc) for towing instructions. Neither one says anything about leaving the key in the ACC position or disconnecting the battery. Those instructions were in some previous manuals, but they have been updated and do not apply to the newer Wranglers.

This would be great except I don't have a 2004-2011 Wrangler it's a 2012 and the manual says, key in ACC, tranny in park, transfer in N, and disconnect the battery. My question is why in ACC and the battery disconnected?

It was born last March. Maybe Jeep or Jeep blogs can help you

I have a 2012 Wrangler and I put the transfer case in neutral the transmission in park ignition is turned off no battery disconnect, lock the door and go. There is not a steering wheel lock so you dont need the key turned to Acc. Pulled mine for the first time from Michigan to Arizona with no problem.

I wonder if I have the wrong manual or if something changed when the model changed from 2011 to 2012?

2012 jk
I have a 2012 JKU automatic I tow. Manual is wrong. Put transfer case in neutral, lock doors and tow away. No key or battery work required. Towed my 2012 about 6000 miles so far with no issues. Don't forget to release the parking brake....did that yesterday.

My 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited manual has the leave the key in the acc position. I called Jeep and they said my manual is wrong. No need to leave the key in the ignition because the steering wheel does not lock. I've towed it about 15000 miles with no issues. I did install the Toad-Charge system to keep the Jeep battery up especially when driving at night.

If you click on the link you'll be able to select your 2012 from a drop down list. The answers to your questions are the ignition does NOT need to be in the ACC position, and the battery does NOT need to be disconnected. No change from what I do with my 2011.

5th-R1 of the 2012 Wrangler manual now said "Turn OFF the engine". The phrase "leave the ignition switch in the unlocked ACC position" has been removed.

Mine is a 2012 Automatic.
Step 1. Connect Jeep to RV.
Step 2. Put tranny in N
Step 3. Put Xfer case in N
Step 4. Put Tranny in P
Step 5. Turn key off and remove key.
Step 6. Get out lock doors.
Good to go. I haven't modified mine at all except for adding a skid plate which has connections for the tow bar. And I just add aux tail lights when it's time to tow.

Hi Ralph.
What is a toad battery charge system? Why would you need that. Any info you can give me is appreciated.
Thanks
Rick.
