I have a 2013 Honda CR-V, 2 wheel drive that I have flat towed for about 7 years. Here is the “before towing setup” routine:
1. Secure car to RV including tow bar attached, safety chains connected, breakaway cable attached and all electrical connections made as needed.
2. Start car if not already running.
3. With the brake pedal depressed shift from Park to Reverse to Neutral, Drive, Second Gear and First gear pausing for a couple of seconds in each position.
4. Shift back up from First Gear to Second Gear to Drive. Pause in Drive for five seconds.
5. Shift from Drive into Neutral and let engine idle while in Neutral for 3 minutes. You can take your foot off the brake at this point.
6. After the engine has idled in Neutral for at least three minutes turn ignition key counter-clockwise one (1j position and leave it there.
7. Verify that the climate control is switched OFF, the Master Switch for the audio is OFF and the Headlight Switch is OFF. Your car is now ready to be towed.
Each car will also have its own requirements for connecting and setting up braking systems, signal and brake lights, etc. in my case, I use a Blue Ox Patriot II wireless braking system and a TowMate wireless light bar that I set up while the 3 minutes of idling in Neutral is going on. I do not have any kind of charging system or a fuse disconnect. I have had a dead battery a few times if I tow for more than 3-4 hours. I keep an automotive battery charger in the car that can be plugged up to the block heater outlet in the coach engine compartment for that situation. It usually takes less than 5 minutes on the charger to be able to bring the car back to life and get it to start.
I have followed this procedure hundreds of times without incident. Even though I typed all of that from memory, I believe that my procedure is exactly what the Honda manual says.
