2016 GMC 1500 flat tow

Anyone know why it is required to disconnect the negative battery cable to flat tow a 2016 GMC 1500 4&4?

Your OWNERS MANUAL will spell out the EXACT procedure for implementing towing behind an RV.

On my 2020 Silverado we used a Roadmaster battery disconnect. I believe it's for the electronic steering, so it can't activate.

On the newer GM's, I believe somewhere around 2015, they used electric steering that DOESN'T turn off when you turn the ignition off. Consequently, the steering can try and correct itself while towing if the battery is not disconnected, eventually ruining the steering.
