2016 Honda HR-V TOAD lights not working
I installed a CURT 56284 custom wiring harness on my 2016 HR-V and it is not working as intended. I have an RV with a 7 blade plug that goes to a 5 pin on the front of the HR-V and I have that wired to the CURT 56284. When I hook up the car none of the lights are controlled by the RV (brake, left or right turn signal or tail lights, but when I press the brake pedal on the car, the RV brakes light. So something is working but nothing is working correctly. Any suggestions on where to start? I previously installed one on a Chevy HHR with a similar CURT custom harness and it worked fine. Is there an easy way to test the system from the pins on the front of the TOAD? Would it be as easy as just applying a 12v battery to each pin and the ground and see if they light up?

Did you check the manual to make sure this is towable 4 down? My understanding ( I could be wrong) is that after 2014 none of the Honda's are towable because the use the CVT for a transmission.

The HR is towable 4 down if you get the manual trans. CVT trans is not towable.

You are correct - if the vehicle has the CVT transmission. But the manual transmission HR-V can be flat towed.
Back to our originally scheduled programming:
Yes, testing the lights can be done with inserting 12 VDC between the ground pin and any of the light pins.
If you do a lot of towing, to eliminate the tow vehicle as a problem point, you can pick up one of these:

Thanks for redirecting the conversation tfryman. Yes I have a manual and it tows well 4 down. I'll need to go find a small 12v battery locally and see what happens. At this point I'm assuming it must be a malfunction in the Curt electrical converter as everything on the taillights/brake lights is plug and play. Even if I miswired the 5 pin connector on the front of the HR-V something would have worked even if it worked wrong.... unless the ground is the one that's wired wrong... I wonder if that could account for no reaction except reversing the car to RV brake functioning.

Strange indeed. I'd install diodes to prevent back feeding to your MH and the back feed from the MH to your toad electronics.
Since you are not using diodes, you should be able to use a multimeter and check the pins on the 5-pin. Turn the parking lights on and see if the correct pin is hot, check brake and signal the same way.
Check using the 5-pin ground and if not working, check to frame ground.

Very strange. If it was not a custom kit. I would tell you the diodes are backwards.

I looked up the custom kit CURT 56284. This looks like its a kit to provide a 4 pin connector for trailer lights on a trailer being towed by the HR.
If this is what it is??? Its working as designed. Isolate the HR from the trailer (motor home), apply lights to trailer (motor home). it would also convert 5 wires to 4 wires.

Hmm... I believe you installed an incorrect kit.
According to this product page, the 56284 is designed to take the HR-V signals and put them on a 4-pin connector so the HR-V can tow a trailer.
This explains why things are "backwards."
The 56284 can't be used. You need a different wiring system. As far as I can tell (and this is no surprise), there are no plug-and-play systems for the HR-V. Here are the options that etrailer.com offers for the 2016 HR-V.

Well how about that! Guess Im the dummy. Well I tested everything prior to seeing these posts and determined on my own that the kit was wired correctly but was not working. So I took the whole thing out and bought a super simple magnetic set from harbor freight for $25. It works great! https://www.harborfreight.com/12v-magnetic-led-towing-light-kit-64282.html
