Smile 2017 Edge Flat Towing

Can anyone tell me why Ford recommends disconnecting the negative battery wire when towing a Ford Edge?
Can something be done so the battery does not need to be disconnected?

FWIW,
The Edge is a power hungry toad. If that battery is not disconnected it will be dead. I have even heard a charge line will not overcome the draw from vehicle modules. It could also have to do with OEMs stability control system like GM is doing. If a battery is not disconnected in a new GM, the traction control will constantly try to keep the toad straight and wear out the brakes and the battery.

I called Ford when I was doing the same thing you are, except with a 2016. They told me the battery disconnect was to keep the battery from going dead. I had a battery charge line put in, instead of a disconnect, and so far have had no problems after 8,000 miles. Our Edge starts right up and hasn't shown any other ill effects from not disconnecting the battery. You might want to find out if anything changed from the 2016 to 2017 model year that is pertinent to this issue? We have an Edge Titanium with the 6 cyl engine. Good luck.

My daughter just got there 2016 Ford Edge Titanium set up to tow and installed this charge system

I have a 2011 Edge Sport and had this one installed

Both do the job.

We have a 2014 Edge. Prior to installing the RVI charge system, we could barely go 4 hours without having a dead battery. Sometimes even less.
After install we have gone 8 1/2 hours with no problem.
