2020 Cherokee Trailhawk - RVI Power

OK - so the search function has me most of the way, but since its the braking system, I am going to ask a couple of things to clear up some gaps.... i dont want to learn the hard way on this one. Hopefully someone with the same setup can help.

So the I ordered the RVI some time ago - its taking forever to get it delivered as the tablet accessory is backordered. I successfully installed everything else - tests out well so far...

I read the Cherokee ECU shuts down after 13 mins and so you have to wire the RVI directly to the battery AND set up battery charging from the coach. So why wouldnt i just run the power wire from the coach plug in to the jeep interior and use it to power the RVI directly?

I did purchase the charger and direct kit - i am just trying to understand why i need it if i am hooking up the power wire to a charger and then directly from the battery to inside the jeep....

Also - if the ECU shuts down, whats happens to power steering? I read that nothing is required on the new cherokees - but I guess I would like to understand this - y'all got me nervous with "death-wobble"...

The RVI needs power to activate the brakes in the even the Jeep detaches from the motorhome. The umbilical cable would become disconnected in this situation, so the RVI must be powered by the towed vehicle battery. While very rare, itís certainly one in which you want it to work.

No idea about the death wobble. I am towing a 2020 Cherokee and never a hint of wobble in perhaps 10k miles. My guess is Jeep altered the suspension geometry during the mid cycle refresh to add stronger self centering without requiring intervention from the electric power steering. But just a guess.

Not sure if your 2020 is like our 2017 Cherokee, but on the 2017 the 12V socket in the armrest stays live all the time, but the 12 v socket on the dash shuts down after the time out.

shadow... yup - that makes a lot of sense - i should have thought of that...

isaac - the rvi site made it seem like i needed to supply power directly from the battery - i wonder if 2020 model changed to no hot plugs - easy to figure out...

i am still curious how the steering works if the ECU shuts down....

I have the same setup - 2020 Trailhawk with RVI brake system. I plug the RVI into the TH armrest and it works fine. I do have an umbilical charge line from the MH to the Trailhawk and use it for brake and turn lights. In tow mode, the steering continues to work just fine. The "death wobble" was fixed by Jeep in 2019. The process for putting the TH into flat tow mode is quirky but if you remember to put it into Park at the end and make sure that the dash shows "off," (and not "ACC") you will be fine. I printed out the flat tow process from the TH owners manual and keep it in the top part of the TH armrest. Most of the time on short trips, i don't use the tablet accessory. It is only needed to adjust the setup and for verification (unless you are using it for TPMS).
