Having the same issue
We are having the same issue and have been told by two different Jeep dealerships that this is normal. Can you tell me if the sound was similar to this https://youtu.be/uGF5oo0T8kw

Having the same issue
Ok - this is our first flat tow so we had the Jeep dealership show us how to do this and read through the manual in both cases the engine is on. Step 1 - With Engine Running and step 11 is when it is shut off. When do you recommend shutting the engine off? Thanks for any advice you can offer as this is frustrating for a new vehicle and for Jeep to say that it is normal.
Use the following procedure to prepare your vehicle for recreational towing:
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop on level ground, with the engine running.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL.
4. If vehicle is equipped with Quadra-Lift air suspension, ensure the vehicle is set to Normal Ride Height.
5. Using a ballpoint pen or similar object, push and hold the recessed transfer case NEUTRAL (N) button (located by the selector switch) for four seconds. The light behind the N symbol will blink, indicating shift in progress. The light will stop blinking (stay on solid) when the shift to NEUTRAL (N) is complete. A “FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM IN NEUTRAL” message will appear in the instrument cluster.
NEUTRAL (N) Button
6. After the shift is completed and the NEUTRAL (N) light stays on, release the NEUTRAL (N) button.
7. Shift the transmission into REVERSE or DRIVE.
8. Release the brake pedal for five seconds and ensure that there is no vehicle movement.
9. Press and hold the brake pedal. Shift the transmission back into NEUTRAL.
10. Firmly apply the parking brake.
11. With the transmission and transfer case in NEUTRAL, push and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button until the engine turns off.
12. Place the transmission gear selector in PARK. Release the brake pedal.
13. Push the ENGINE START/STOP button twice (without pressing the brake pedal), to turn the ignition to the off mode.
14. Attach the vehicle to the tow vehicle using a suitable tow bar.
15. Release the parking brake.

I have the same sound. and same statement from Jeep. However i tried this the yesterday.
Put transmission in neutral, then push 4wheel low, after it is in 4wheel low push your transfer case neutral button. At this point my noise is gone. Even when i roll it down the drive way. (HOWEVER)
MY QUESTION NOW IS WITH THE TRANSFER CASE IN 4WHEEL Low will the internals will be turning faster and overheat.
I discovered this yesterday and have not talked to Jeep

Once you have the transfer case in neutral, you are no longer in 4wheel low so there is no problem. That is apparently just a way to get the 4wheel high and 2wheel to totally disengage.

I just tried what you said above and the noise was gone just like you indicated, the 4 Low light goes out once the transfer case neutral button is pushed but I don't hear any of the noise stationary or when the vehicle was in motion. Could this be the "fix"? I'll chat with my Jeep advisor next week and see what they think about this. I do not like the noise and I don't want to tow with it making it so this might be a workaround. Thanks for the research and post!

My instructions say to shift to neutral while engine is running. Mine transfer case is quite and makes no noise. I'd be concerned if noise is made.....

Your PTU is on it's way out. Mine did that in my Cherokee. $4200 to replace it and without it you can't go into TOAD mode. Yours should still be under warranty. Just pay the deductible .

That is my hope that the transfer case is not in 4 low. And the new procedure that I posted is the fix for this problem. I think this affects the 2020 and 2021 model years of the Grand Cherokee and maybe others.

You can turn the engine off but there is no way to turn the car all the way off unless you put the gear selector in park it cannot be left in neutral for flat tow. So it looks like the car will be going in for service. Any ideas would be of great help.

Our 2019 Cherokee and maybe (I don’t know for sure) your CG as well must be in park for towing. Sounds wrong, but that ensures nothing moves while towing. And yes, our manual is wrong about telling you to have the engine running when shifting into park. Per many posts on the Jeep Cherokee forum, I turn the engine off then shift into park. No gear grinding that way.
You probably have the same 9 speed auto tranny we have and it is not towable by itself. What makes it towable is having the 4WD transfer case available only with the active two driveline, that can be shifted into neutral which then disconnects the tranny from the driveline so it will not be damaged when towing.

I know this thread is a couple months old but wanted to follow up and see if @PrinterMan or anyone else verified with Jeep that pushing the 4wheel low button before the transfer case neutral button is a Jeep recommended solution to this. I am having the same issue with my 2021 GC and PrinterMan's work around fixed it for me. Nothing else is getting rid of the clicking noise.
I just stopped by a local Jeep service department and they told me if the work around works, do it! I told them I would like to get something official from them on this. They said they will need to look at it and it is 1+ months to get an appointment.
Any other guidance from anyone experiencing this issue?
Thanks in advance.

I never did get anything official from Jeep, I tried three different dealerships and Jeep Wave Customer Care. But we have flat towed our 2021 Jeep GC using the @PrinterMan method from Florida to Boston and back and then from Florida to Indiana and back with no issues. Our local shop that installed all our flat tow equipment thinks there is an issue with the PTU which is corrected when switching to 4 low but Jeep would not agree and refused to repair.
