2021 Jeep Cherokee Latitude with Active Drive II
Purchased a new Cherokee for flat towing and the directions for putting the transfer case into neutral are a bit confusing. I think process is the same for 2019 and 2020. Does anyone have step by step instructions they might share?
Thanks!

You might find this helpful, I am not sure if the new ones are the same as the older Cherokees (we have a 2017 Cherokee Overland with AD-II) https://rvlove.com/wp-content/upload...WING-STEPS.pdf

Your manual will give you a step by step process to set up. We made a cpy of ours to keep in the glove box so easy to get to and set up take about two minutes.

I flat tow a 2020 Cherokee Limited. It really is not as complicated as all the steps make it appear.
The rv love link is a workable process but they sure are doing it the hard way - putting the Jeep in neutral, setting the parking brake, booking up the tow bar, then clearing the parking brake.
I pull the Jeep behind the MoHo, attach the tow bar, and then put it in flat tow mode. No need to set or clear the parking brake because the Jeep ain’t going nowhere.
The basic steps are simple. 1) Get in Jeep and close door. 2) Put Jeep in run mode without starting engine. This is done by pushing the start button 2 times with foot off brake. Look at the button to confirm - “run” will be illuminated on the perimeter. 3) Using the touchscreen, unset the automatic parking brake application upon putting transmission in park. Only needs to be done once and can be left off if you prefer. 4) Shift to neutral. 5) Use ball point pen to depress the N button, wait until light stops blinking. You are in flat tow mode. 5) Start engine and shift to reverse (forward works too if you prefer) to verify Jeep is indeed in flat tow mode. 6) Note: I diverge from Chrysler here. Shift transmission back to neutral. Switch off engine while transmission is n neutral. Shift to park. (Chrysler directions are to shift to park before shutting off engine. This results in a nasty grinding noise from the parking pawl. Probably harmless, but puts us car guys in edge. 7) Yer good.
The clever car likes to automatically apply the parking brake to save you from rolling away. It can be very insistent and annoying. Closing the door while performing this process and disabling the automatic setting of the parking brake are necessary. Develop the habit of checking it as you exit the Jeep - if the little light in the parking brake switch is off, you’re good to go.
With practice the process takes about 30 seconds. Don’t let the excess of steps in the manual intimidate you.

We have a 2019 Lattitude Plus as well. Completely agree with above directions. Hook up car first to tow bar. This allows not needing the parking brake at all and allows skipping some steps. Always double check the parking brake before final exit or opening door.
When tranny is in neutral turn off engine first to avoid gear clash.
Finally, once fully hooked up, we always do a light check and I look at the tow bar to make sure it is locked and also look at the rear wheels of the Jeep while wife pulls motorhome ahead a few feet. This is to make sure the parking brake is indeed off.
We also have a copy of the pages in the manual we follow each time with the corrections about turning the engine off before shifting into park. As stated above, the entire process is fast and easy, just follow it precisely and don’t get distracted by somebody. If you do, start over.

Just to clarify, turning off the auto parking brake will not prevent the "clever car" from applying it if you take the shifter out of Park with the door open. Pretty sure that was your intent, but wanted it to be clear.
I have a different term for the car than "clever", but your choice is better for polite company!

This is probably due to that Star Trek actor dying when his jeep pinned him to his mail box. So now the Cherokees automatically engage the parking brake any time the door is open and will not allow you to drive with the door open, even when you turn off the automatic parking brake.
