Hi,

What toad would folk recommend for about 5,000$?

It would only be a daily driver outside winter as already have a 4runner 4wd.

I am thinking a Chevy Cruze or Toyota Corolla.

I towed a Chevy HHR. It was a great toad. I don’t think ( could be wrong ) that Toyota’s are towable without modification.

Verify that the vehicle is flat towable by checking the owners manual. Almost every manual transmission vehicle can be flat towed without speed or distance restrictions. If the vehicle is not currently set up to tow it could cost an additional $2-3K to add a base plate, braking system, tow bar, etc. Check the classifieds here and elsewhere for a ready to go toad.

Have not decided on whether to flat or dolly tow yet.
I have no issue with a manual.

You have to decide automatic or manual transmission before throwing out ideas as to what vehicle you have in mind.

Towing 4 down will eliminate a lot of models if you pick automatic. And.....the tow bar manufacturers don’t make baseplates for every vehicle out there. They know the most common ones and have those in stock most times.

Thanks for the reply. I dont think I need to decide right now on a transmission type.

If i decide on a manual I will flat tow, if its an auto I will dolly tow.

Finding the right car is more important than the tow method, as mentioned I will also use it as a daily driver outside winter.

Cut your budget in half and get a Kia Soul Plus with the 2.0L engine matched with the 6 speed automatic transmission. Great combination with plenty of low RPM grunt and high RPM giddy up. Plenty of head room and leg room for those folks of the larger persuasion. My 3 boys are all north of 6 feet and are comfortable in the back and front seats.

I hate climbing up into and sliding down out of bloated pickups and SUVs. I also hate hitting my head getting into and out of almost every modern day sedan made. It has never happened in our Soul. Despite the cute hamster ad campaign you might notice most Soul drivers are of the more mature persuasion.

The only 2 problems we've had with the car in the 5 years we've owned it are a blown fuse I caused swapping an incandescent bulb for an LED bulb in the cargo area and a rodent chewed up an ABS wiring harness.

It's a really great car that we enjoy driving every day. We tow it on an American Car Dolly (another great product) with electric brakes and a Tekonsha P3 brake controller. I don't have any problems getting the car on and off the dolly or moving the dolly around the campsite by hand. I added a hitch to the Kia and take the dolly anywhere I need to with the car. I may just put the front wheels of the coach on to the dolly while it's hooked up to the Soul and take a gag photo.😀

I think I'll go look for my tape measure now.😎

We have had the " Old Soul " ( 2011 ) for 70,000 miles. It has the 2.0 BIG engine and has been trouble free.

We bought it with 30,000 miles so I did have to replace the timming belt at 90,000 and I thru a set of brake pads on it. Figured it was time for them.

Like said above, roomy for 4 big adults and plenty of power. We did extensive touring in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin, and it cruised along at 80 MPH on the empty highways. Great little car.

We have a 2006 PT Cruiser that I tow behind a Tiffin 32' "Open Road" Think I paid $5600 with 52000 mi, stick shift. Very happy with it. Its a four but seems to have enough power even with 4 in the car. I've never had to do it, but has a lot of configurations for carrying stuff. We also use it as a second car, and daily driver. Works for us!!!!

Corolla AT is not towable four down. Any CRV 2014 or earlier, and any transmission, will work fine.

Chevy took the Cruz off the list of towable vehicles.

We tow a Chevy Spark with a manual trans. Weighs 2,246 #s. It is a hatchback so you can lay the back seats down if you need to haul dogs or other stuff.
