7 pin plug

As I take it, in the 7 pin wiring plug, one of the terminals is 12v. If needed, can that 12v wire be used for a battery feed wire for the toad?

Correct , if properly wired from the factory , you can use it for toad battey charge.

Yes. Use a 10 ga wire direct to the +12 pole on your battery and put a 15a, 20a, or higher fuse as close to the toad battery pole as possible. You already have that 7pin pole protected on the RV. All the high price "charge" gizmos and protectors simply drain your wallet and charge the toad battery at a lesser rate than the direct wire. I've been using this wiring setup on 3 Class A's and for over 250,000 tow miles and have never had a problem.

You may also want to add a large diode to the charge line to keep the two systems separate. The diode will keep the toad battery from back feeding the coach system. There was a discussion regarding this a month or two ago. Maybe someone with better searching skills than or knowledge I have can find it or enlighten both of us.

Turn off the coach ignition key when stopped. No backfeed. That kills the 7 pin +12 pin. A diode reduces the charge rate and is NOT necessary.

About adding a 10ga. wire. Most of the mh/toad connect cables Ive seen have been the pigtail, corkscrew type. Now, I doubt those have a 10 ga wire in them, so how do you add that extra wire to keep it tidy and neat and not looking like you know what?

If the mh is wired with the 12v terminal in the socket, will it be that large of a wire? If its not, shouldnt it be?

This is assuming I even need a battery wire, how do I know?

I appreciate the info, good stuff here!

Understand that this pertains to my pickup trucks and not motorhome wiring, but I believe the 12 volt output on the 7 Pin stays live with or without key on GMC Canyon and Chevy Silverado: Actually, I know this is the case on my Silverado. I left the key for the trailer battery disconnect in the glove box when I was hooking up, so no trailer battery power, just plugged in the 7 pin so I could raise and lower the tongue jack without having to walk 15 feet to where the key was located.

Okay, I admit it, I was lazy.

In any event, if you are "toading" behind your GM truck, the 12 volt pin is live.

Standard pre-molded 7 pin plugs and wire are available throughout the internet, but you do have to be careful what you buy. I have seen some with all 7 wires of 14ga and I have also seen some with 10ga, 12ga, and 14ga wires. This is just wire, but has 2 of 10, 1 of 12, and 4 of 14. https://www.amazon.com/East-Penn-049...3883188&sr=8-8 I have seen identical cable sold by the foot at Lowes a while ago. I also have 3 pre-molded cable and plug setups in my spare parts box with multi gauge wire. Be careful what you buy, but the right stuff is out there.
