All Terrain Tires for Toad

We are procuring a 2014 Honda CR-V for flat tow behind our '05 Monaco Knight 38PDQ.

This AWD vehicle will scout out our boondocking sites on BLM and forestry preserve roads. We will also use the CR-V for exploring some of the back country trails.

We don't need a Jeep.

What AT tire do you suggest for this vehicle that has good sidewall protection, is decent in mud and sand, and good handling on dry pavement?

Also, does anyone know how tall a tire I can mount on the CR-V for some extra ground clearance?

Regards and see you on the road,

Mike and Deb Fry

Just look for an all terrain tire with a 3 ply sidewall rating. Nitto makes a couple and Toyo does as well. There's Maxxis and BFG as well.

BFG has several options. I often see the All Terrain K02 on Subarus and other AWD cars.

I will suggest this - if you can fit a LT tire on that CRV do so. Ours goes through tires like crap through a goose. Never have made it farther than 75% of a warranted mileage. It's not an alignment issue - they wear like they've been on a lathe. But some CRVs just eat tires.

We bout ours with 17" rims and there aren't a lot of good choices. Eventually we just bought the highest load rated tires we could get in that size (and it has gone up steadily since 2007 when we bought it). That helps a little, but 40K mi has been about the limit.

We have had very good luck with the Yokohama Geolander G15's. They are very capable and tough offroad and ear very well mannered and quiet on the road!

We have Falken Wildpeak AT tires on our 2017 Jeep Cherokee TOAD and think they are a good all around compromise for the Cherokee which is mostly driven on road, but is a 4WD Jeep with a low range transfer case.
