Anyone towing a Chevy 2009 (1/2) AVEO ?
We have a new Aveo, 5 speed manual transmission. Blue Ox says they sell the tow bar for 4 down towing. Remco said they have not heard of problems towing
this unit and therefore no "pump", etc., is sold. Owners Manual says no but no reason why not. Would appreciate any comment from some who successfully tow this unit without Dolly or trailer. Thanks. This is the H 5 model withfoglights openings and is the model for Blue Ox base plate pictures.

GM owners manuals contain excellent and accurate towing info and since the owners manual states no towing hopefully someone can answer your question.
Perhaps your dealer could escalate your question in the Chevy corporation to find out why the Aveo is not towable.

I have a 2007 Aveo and have been towing it sucessfully until May 23 when I was towing it home the motor burned out. After about 2 miles as I was turning onto a highway I was stopped by a highway patrolman and I say why in the rear view mirror. There was smoke and oil dripping out of the motor compartment. I had it towed to the Chevy dealership and then received the word that the motor had burned out. I bought the car used and didn't read the warning about towing on all 4. I had towed it on numerous occasions without any problem. The car only has 7500 miles on it and should have been under warrantee, but it was not honored because of the clause in the owners manual. I also don't see why a manual transmission in nutral should not be towable. But they got me on this one. So be cautious! Also, I have an issue with the Roadmaster people about why they would build and sell a tow bracket for a car that can not be towed. I am working on that to find out the answer. Now we don't know what to do for a towable toad. I read on another web discussion that someone tows the Aveo (automatic) by starting the engine and leaving it idling in neutral while towing. He says he gets 125MPG on the towed car running in neutral.

Most manual transmission's cannot be towed because the output gearing is being turned by the wheels. In these cases the oil is not being picked up, and therefore, not lubricating the output bearings. So they spin without lubrication.
On "some" manual transmission's the output shaft, or gearing, provides this lubrication because it contacts the tranny oil and throws it up on the bearing/s. This is also true of some automatic transmission's, but not very many. Mostly GM. But, the AVEO is not one of them, which is why I didn't buy one, when I was looking.

originally looked at the G3
then were in contact with GM
after emails with GM, in the end, bought a 2009 Pontiac G5
(suggest that ALWAYS check with manufacturer - as wanted to ensure there would be no warranty issues)
regards,
peter

I Contacted GM, They Cannot give Me a reason Other Than It Does Not have the correct Components for Towing.

Front drive manual trannys often rely on the engine to circulate lubricating fluids in the transmission. Just having the wheels turn does not necessarily do it, as sofi found out.

The Chevy HHR is certified by GM towable four down. I know theMalibu is also, but I thought the aveo was also. Maybe it was the automatic. I have towed the HHR for several thousand miles since I have it and no problems. Just put the ignition in the acc position and the trans in neutral.
