Battery Disconnect on GMC Canyon 4x4

I just got a 2021 GMC Canyon 4x4 and I'm going to tow it with a Roadmaster All Terrain tow bar. I know I'll have to disconnect the battery once the transfer case is in neutral.

Question? Will I lose presets on Radio when I do this? Time? Driver presets??

Why do you need to disconnect the battery?

No....you don't lose the presets. A little secret...before you disconnect, reverse the tow procedure and let the engine idle while your disconnecting. This lets all the computer stuff catch up. Once in the truck, it will tell you to roll down the driver's window and then roll it back up. By then all the other systems will be back to normal.

Roadmaster makes an electronic battery disconnect with a simple button you switch from inside the cab to disconnect the battery. It only works with gas models, not the diesel.

If you PM me with an email address, I will send you a check off list I made for placing the truck into tow mode and then out of tow mode. I printed a copy and laminated it. I kept in the passenger seat back pocket. On the back card, I put the emergency procedure for getting it out of tow mode if there is an issue (which I never had).

We have a 2020 Colorado we tow and installed a remote battery disconnect as well. Definitely use a checklist with this vehicle when setting up or disconnecting for towing. I have one as well with the reasons for each step; if you would like to take a look at it I can post it as an attachment in this thread.

If you have the diesel......

I made this (somewhat extravagant) disconnect due to the Diesel needs more amps than the gasser. The Perko disconnect provides ample amps needed for starting the diesel.

I tried the simple $15 disconnects but found periodically they would lose connection which required me to unscrew and retighten the connection.

This Perko works flawlessly..... FWIW

Before you buy.....The Blue Ox base plates mount above the bumper. The Roadmaster base plates mount where the tow hooks are mounted. This is IMPORTANT depending on the type of coach you have. The Blue Ox, because they mount higher, work better with most gassers that usually have a high receiver.

We tow our 16 canyon 4x4 diesel with no disconnect and no issues. If you install the road master or other light kit from etrailer.com which has diodes, it will use coach power only
