Best toad?
Our Allegro has 5k towing limit. Wondering if we should go subcompact, under 3k, or if a midsize 3500-3800 weight will make much difference in performance of RV?
Considering flat tow to maximize weight and length.
Bottom line... will 1000 lbs be noticeable difference?

lol Toad? What Toad? I don't even realize mine is back there. Towing is the least of my worry I am always fearful that I look at the camera one day and the Jeep is gone!
We tow a wrangler, easy to tow, capable both on and off road, and sometimes its nice to go topless!

You are going to spend way more time driving the car than towing the car. The most important thing is to have the right car to drive even if you take a tiny hit on performance of the coach when you are towing in my opinion.

Very happy with KIA Soul (manual trans), very roomy for 5, 2800#'s.

Bottom line without the camera you wouldn't know it was there even if it weighted in at 5001 Lbs. If what you already have in the driveway doesn't suit your needs or can not be configured to your desired towing method then as c_oneil posted first focus on how you plan to use the toad when not dragging it around. Some owners want the option of being able to hit the back woods trails while others prefer a vehicle that is more suited for improved roads. Just as many options regarding vehicles as there are concerning the hardware needed to make it work.

We opted to go small so we got a Chevy Sonic, automatic so the wife can drive it. It is also my daily driver for going to the golf course, workouts, whatever shopping I have to do. Pick the car you want to go with that you both can drive. The number of cars that can be towed 4-down is getting smaller and smaller but still some good light to mid weight options.

One that a lot of people like (me included) is the Honda CR-V but none newer than 2014 are towable now. There are a few Honda's that are towable, even a couple Accords, but all are manual trans, no automatics.
Before getting the CR-V I towed a '05 Odyssey both 4 down and on a dolly. Sold it with 105,000+ on the meter and another 40,000 towing.

We like the ability to go down dirt and gravel roads to explore off the main trails and tow a 2Dr Jeep JK Sahara. On the two of us and the dog and it does a great job and tows very nicely behind our class C. If you wanted something for more than 2 adults, then look to the 4dr Jeep as the back seat of the 2r is really for small dogs and kids. Bottom line, you'll never know its there until you look in the camera.

You can still find 2014 Honda CRV Certified Used with low miles. I think the CRV and Wrangler must be the two most popular toads. My CRV is my everday car and meets my needs even though I downsized from a Mazda CX9 which is not towable. We need the SUV over the off road capabilities of the Wrangler. The CRV also hauls a lot of excess gear and not load down the RV. CRV is about 3600 lbs. My tow limit is 4400 lbs.

you'll have an even better answer when you find out your 'real' towing capacity:
....your coach'es GVCWR minus it's full loaded/with people WEIGHT.
Your tow vehicle and towbar setup will need to be at this, or lesser, weight.
The 5,000lb hitch rating is only for the hitch, not necessarily what you can ACTUALLY tow, within the manufacturers/chassis safety specs.
...many floorplans and lenghts of even the same make/model coaches differ in their towing capacity... it's all relative to the chassis design, the coaches 'built'(dry) weight, and the rating of the hitch, of course.
...we have a 10,000lb rated hitch, but can only tow in the 3,500lb neighborhood, with the coach loaded with stuff, us peoples, and water and fuel.
travel, enjoy.... (p.s....a Fiesta or Focus is a great tow car, auto, and easy!)

I just went from towing a Lexus es 330 ( comparable to a toyota camry) on a Dolly....to a 2015 Kia soul (flat tow). Shaved off about 1000 lbs and honestly I can not tell a difference. I once had a blow out on the Dolly and never felt it, just happened to look at the camera monitor. And thats when I purchased the tpms

Get a toad that matches your needs and wants. We like to get off the road and back into the outback, so a EconoBox would be a waste for us. We tow a stock 2000 Blazer ZR2 4x4 2door 4.3 5spd. It takes us places an EconoBox wouldn't make it out alive.
