Anything you can find that is in this guide or will otherwise work. Many people like towing Jeeps.

I just bought a 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat 4X4. It weights 4400 pounds (600) less than the limits for most Ford F53 based Class A motorhomes.

Remco will tell you what cars can be towed 4 down.

What do you want to do with it? Will you use it only to go to the store once a week? Is your trip to the store paved or gown a big mountain? Will you carry 3 friends or just you and the partner. DO you want to tow heavy or lite? We picked a classic Geo Tracker. We like classic and these little 4 wheelers will go places many Jeeps won't and for some reason they attract a lot of attention.

The best 4 down toad is the one being towed by the person being asked the question. Prepare for many different answers.

What is your towing capacity? Some toads are over 5000lbs.

Do you want a manual or automatic transmission?

Do you need 4-wheel drive or AWD?

Is fuel economy a concern?

What is your budget?

Thanks all. Pretty much what we found in our due diligence. Wanted to avoid Jeep due to price as they seem to be the “it” toad in high demand. Prefer a smaller but comfy SUV for running to the store, into town, that sort of thing.

Be sure to check your max tow weight and CGVW. Do not forget load in coach including people, fuel, clothes, etc.

Just bought a new Chevy Equinox AWD, diesel, for towing. Very easy to set up and gets 34 MPG combined. Weighs around 3700 lbs.

2020 Equinox

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2020 Equinox LT with FWD. Leaving Honda in the dust as they no longer offer an officially towable vehicle with an automatic transmission. The Chevy towing guide mentions disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery but that step isn't mentioned in the most recent Motorhome Mag towing guide. Obviously, that is something I would not want to do. Anyone familiar with the specifics of setup for towing the Equinox before each trip?

My Ford E450 has a towing capacity of 5,000. Equinox fully loaded will come in under 4,000.

No off road use.

Light duty (2 passengers and dog) maybe 6,000 miles (not including the towing mileage) on pavement always.

Price point is 31K. (don't want to go higher).

A few months ago I traded my paid for, low mileage 2014 CR-V completely set up for towing for a higher mileage 2014 Wrangler that needed setting up. Why? No towing limits and I wanted more room and some slight offroad capability plus I had a '97 Grand Cherokee previously and liked it.

Man, that's like going to the liquor store and asking what's the best thing to drink...lol.
It all depends on what you plan to do, and what your towing gcvwr will safely allow.
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with manual trans is my choice, but we like to 4x4. Not the smoothest ride in the world, and definitely not for everybody. Honda CR-V is very popular also, very comfy and room for four...or that trip to Costco.
Don't rule out a Mini Cooper if it's just two of you, much better than a Smart car imho. Ford Ranger or Tacoma Prerunner 2wd long bed is great also. Carries two dirt bikes, firewood etc.
Choices choices........good luck.

Thumbs up

Thx for all the good suggestions. Many options to consider. Decided to go with 2017 or 2018 GMC Terrain to best suit our needs. Can’t wait to get out there and see this beautiful country of ours. Happy trails and safe travels to all!
