Best used auto 4WD TOAD vehicle?

We really like our '06 Ford Explorer. Auto 4x4 hi and low. Used it a few times, really easy pushbutton. Requires Ford neutral-tow-kit and then is pushbutton for towing.

Well, the '99 Jeep Cherokee wasn't exactly what we expected so we didn't buy it. Now we're going to check out a '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee tomorrow. It's 4WD, V8, automatic. We already have a Roadmaster 5000 tow bar - just need the brackets (Roadmaster 1411-1 or 1411-2). No lube pump or drive shaft coupler required - correct? Just position the transfer case to neutral, put the car in either park or neutral, and hook up, and we're ready to tow 4 on the floor - correct? Anyone out there towing a '98 Grand Cherokee and if so, how is it?

there are very few 2wd jeeps, and you couldn't flat tow one even if you find one.

Grand Cherokee... this is the big luxury jeep. MOST are all wheel drive, with a big transfer case **** lever on the console labelled 4hi, neutral, 4lo.
Great cars, inline 6 or v8 power, loaded.

Cherokee.... older 4 door jeep sedan / wagon. inline 6, with wrangler style part time transfer case.

Liberty..... newer replacement for the cherokee. v6, electric transfer case. flat towable if there is a neutral position on the transfer caseshift dial.

wrangler TJ... classic shorty jeep. comfy for 2, less so for 4. rouch ride. round headlights, coil springs. inline 6 or 4 with part time 4wd. built until 2006. always flat towable.

wrangler xj. the new jeep. much more civilized. many are 4 doors and bigger. some stretched 2 door unlimiteds, interior shares a lot with liberty. drivetrain is same as newer liberty.

most older jeeps have PART TIME 4WD. that is what the guy you talked to wth the cherokee was saying. transfer case is manual, a big lever on the floor. selections are 2hi, 4hi, neutral, and 4lo.

these are not made to be used in 4wd on dry pavement. that is the part time part. in 4hi or 4lo, the front and rear axles are solidly locked together, they cannot turn at different speeds when cornering. they will kinda "hop". I use 4hi in rain or snow, otherwise always in 2hi on pavement.

A jeep wrangler works best for us. Your choice 2 door or 4. No mods. Good because of manual transfer case. Go any where and comfortable with hard top. Tows like a dream. Be sure to get tow vehicle brakes hook up. We pull with 2008 40 ft Fleetwood Excursion. Rick & Karen

2000 Fleetwood Pace Arrow Vision 36B (37ft)

I towed a '97 Jeep GC with the quadratrack, full time 4WD for many miles and at up to 90 mph or maybe a little faster with never any problems. Transfer case in Neutral, trans in Park. Used a RoadMaster Sterling towbar and BrakeMaster brake unit. Installed everything myself.

Attached is a document I made that I use as a checklist of the steps to put vehicle in tow status for my Liberty 4x4.
Towing – Four-Wheel Drive Model



PLACING IN NEUTRAL TO TOW



1. Depress the brake pedal and turn the ignition switch to ON/RUN with the engine shut off.

2. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL.


3. Shift the transfer case into NEUTRAL by holding down the NEUTRAL Pin switch for four seconds until the LED starts to blink. The LED will stop blinking and remain on when the shift is complete.


4. Start the engine and shift into DRIVE to ensure there is no vehicle movement.


5. Shut the engine off and shift the transmission into PARK.


6. Place the ignition switch in the OFF position and remove the key.


7. Apply the parking brake, attach the vehicle to the tow vehicle with a tow bar and release the parking brake.


TO PLACE BACK INTO A DRIVEABLE CONDITION REPEAT STEPS 1 THROUGH 7!

You won't beat used Cherokee XJ 4.0L, 3200 lbs. and plenty of room. Look for a 98-01, can be found with less than 100k miles at $5k and are good for another 100k miles.

Most any Jeep, and this is an especially good idea.
