Biting the bullet and test driving toads this week
Hi all,
At this stage you must all be annoyed with my toad threads. I have gone back and forth from convertibles to suvs to jeeps and some in between. :-)
Both our daily drivers are not candidates for towing and neither of us are willing to give up what we have.
What we really need is the lightest smallest front wheel drive hatch back that can carry 2 Kayaks on the roof, 2 bikes with the back seats down. We would only use it for short local forays from state parks. We will mainly use it to carry our Kayaks and bikes and next year to go purchase firewood due to Michigan firewood ban from only approved sources.
As this is a dedicated toad it needs to be cheap as possible.
Our coach is 38ft Winne UFO gssser. Should I rent or borrow a trailer of similar size to a small car to see if towing is for me?
Thanks,

I suggest you go with a tow dolly. That will save you the investment of the installation of a base plate and all the related expenses of towing 4 down.

Hi Bob,
I had thought about a Dolly. Can I still carry Kayaks if I dolly tow?

Why not? You are going to strap them on the roof anyway.
You might get lucky and find a decent used one on Craigslist. That's what I did and turned around and sold it a year later for what I paid for it after the transmission went south the car. Bought a Focus and set it up to flat tow.

Keep in mind you can only tow 4000 lbs even though your hitch is rated for 5000.

Was just not sure if I could.

Hi Ufo,
Thabks for that.
I had the coach weighed this week and it came in at 22400lbs. Would that not mean I can tow 5000lbs? I would rather only tow about 3,000-3,500lbs though.

If you don't exceed 25000 fully loaded you should be able to tow 5000. I weighed mine fully loaded for travel and I was just under 26000. If we are going to boondock I carry a full tank of gas and a full tank of water, that is about 1600 lbs.

Thanks Ufo,
My weigh includes full tank of water and gas, yours is 2 foot longer and has a much bigger rear/kitchen slide, that must add some weight.

I called Acme and they don't see any issue with kayaks once they are not too long.

Chevy Spark Activ.....
Only manuals can be towed flat.
They're affordable, it has roof racks (you can get creative). Factory/dealer offers a small hitch as an option and the hitches already have a large accessory catalog for 'an active urban owner', meaning someone who bikes.
The Activ is FULLY loaded, and has heated leatherette seats, that are easy to clean.
Here is a brand new one for next to nothing:

If I ever wanted a toad, that would be it!
Edit: It weighs 2300 lbs........

My recommendation is in my signature line. No tow dolly is of better quality or ease of use. The Soul is probably the best car I have ever owned and is more fun to drive than the '68 GTO and the Triumph TR4 of my younger days.

Thanks,
I am using the irv2.com app and your signature shows a Kawasaki motor bike.
Do you mean a Kia Soul?
