BlueOx Kar Gard Clarification

Hi All

I have been looking for clarification on towing my 2017 Buick Enclave and the use of a Blue Ox Kar Gard. I found this in the Buick's owners manual:

"Use of a shield mounted in front of the vehicle grille could restrict airflow and cause damage to the transmission. The repairs would not be covered by the vehicle warranty. If using a shield, only use one that attaches to the towing vehicle."

I'm wondering if this is for the bra type covers. A call to Blue Ox gave no indication of yea or nay.

Thanks in advance for any help

I'd try towing the car with no shield then use an infrared thermometer to see if the transmission does heat up. The warning sounds like they're talking about towing the car and needing airflow to keep things cool, it also sounds like they are talking about a shield exactly like the Kar Gard. You could perhaps cut some openings in the Kar Gard and cover with screen to allow air through but not rocks. The Kar Gard is rather expensive to have to modify it so heavily.

The alternative would use a car shield that fastens under the tow bar and fits between the RV and car bumpers. It would be much cheaper than replacing a burnt transmission!

I've used a blue ox towing system for years, I love it, you don't need a kargard unless you drive on gravel roads a lot. I don't have one and have towed three different vehicles and never got a scratch. I recently bought a stick shift civic so I don't have to worry about automatic transmission overheat. If you have an automatic follow the instructions to a tee or you will be like me, in the middle of the dessert with a blown transmission. I had to have a shop in Bull Head city, AZ replace it, 6 grand and it took 6 weeks, had to go out there from Southern Ca. to pick it up. I took a chance and I paid dearly for it. Now if you don't want to worry about it you can get a transmission cooler from Remco installed, it is made for exactly this. They cost around 2 thousand but your transmission will remain cool with no worries.
