Braking system - is used ok?

Our 2009 Excursion is getting set up with a Blue Ox alpha this week so we can begin towing. I'm buying the Patriot brake system as a supplemental brake, here is my question. I found a used (never used new in box) unit for half the price. Would you buy it or spend the $1,000 on new new?

If it is truly never used I don't see why not. Only question is it from a private seller or somewhere that will offer a warranty?

We bought our Blue Ox tow bar from Craigslist and it has been great.

It is a private seller, probably buying as is, the pictures show it in wrappers etc.

As I recall the Patroit system is one of those box in teh driver's position pedal pushers.

Far as I am concerned those have two major problems, Does not matter if new or used.
1: though they advertise NO INSTALLATION NEEDED fact is you install them EVERY TIME YOU TOW, and this means it is way too easy to say "Oh, that's too much work" on a short trip.. and regret it later.

2: EVERY install is a chancce to mess it up.. On my towed the dealer did the install of the system I choose.. and so far they have a 100% record of screwing it up.. THEY ARE TRAINED.. how much more likely are you to make a mistake.. I know I've made a few over the years.

I suggest you go to the Blue Ox website and check on the unit. They also have a 3 minute video on "installation" and set-up. That's about how long it takes to set the unit up prior to towing as well. I just returned from my first trip towing four-down and the Patriot performed as advertised.
You may also want to call Blue Ox and ask if the warranty is transferable, or as it's still new in the box, you may be able to warranty it to you.

I bought A brake buddy and blue ox tow bar several years ago via Craigslist. Has worked well all the years.
