Can i tow this 4 down?

Ok, so i have searched the forum and internet with no luck to my answer. I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee xj, it has a chevy 400 conversion V8, it has a 700r4 transmission and 231 transfer case. My question is can i tow it 4 down?

Good luck with this one. My post will put it back on top. My thoughts : transfer case in neutral and trans in park. This is only my thought I have nothing to back it up.

Driveshaft disconnect possibly. I guess there are no locking hubs on front axle.

If the 231 xfer is original it has a true neutral position and thus can be flat towed. The transmission is of no concern providing the xfer has a true neutral position as the stock 231 had. The reason the transmission is of no concern is that the driveshafts turn the xfer gears before the transmission......so the place to provide a neutral position is in the xfer. The only practical way to check this that I know of is to stop the Jeep on a hill, put the trans in park and the transfer in neutral, release the brakes...............if it rolls without stripping the parking pawl then the xfer is truely in neutral.

Another fool-proof solution is to change all hubs to full floating....doing this will stop the driveshafts from turning while you are towing the Jeep. Mucho $$$.
Hope this helps you out.

1) What does your owner manual say - it is the ONLY definitive resource
2) Try Application Charts | Remco Towing application charts

The OP's Jeep is not stock..........it's been "molested".
But, you have a good suggestion for those folks that have a stock vehicle.

I rolled right over the Chey V8 part.... Sounds like a nifty conversion...

Do you know if the NP231 xfer will self lubricate under a neutral tow? I seem to recall some of the Dana xfer cases would and some wouldn't???? You're right, tow ability will rest in having a true neutral in the xfer case.

The NP231 does not have a lube pump. It lubes by the gears running through a sump. The gears turn while being towed it's just the "un-mating" of the drive gears that provide the neutral.

My best guess is that yout test will have a pleasing outcome for you.

Just so you have a little more comfort.......the 231 has been used for years beginning in the 80's and up until at least 2006. It was used in Wranglers and the Cherokees basic lines but not the GC.
They all had a true neutral.
