Car On Dolly

I tow my car on an American brand tow dolly. The plate the wheels sit on do not turn. The steering wheel on my car does not lock. Is it necessary to tie the steering down to the brake pedal to keep it from turning??

If the plate doesn't pivot then the dolly wheels must have steering knuckles which articulate in a turn. No need to tie your steering wheel.

You should check again, if you have an American Car Dolly, they only make pivot plate and you do have to lock the steering wheel.

You may have the Acme brand dolly.

If it has 12" tires and does not have a swivel plate, you do NOT tie your steering.

Your car needs to turn the front tires in turns otherwise the dolly tires will skid, split and fail.

Google Acme and American Car Dolly to compare what yours looks like.

I'll second the note about the American Car Dolly. I have one and it does swivel.

Agree with twinboat. If the dolly wheel plate doesn't swivel, then the toad steering wheel must be unlocked and untied.

Everything I've read says the American brand tow dolly does have swiveling wheel plates, so lawingnutz seems to be misinformed about what he has.

Yes my American tow dolly had a swivel wheel plate as does my new MasterTow. The steering wheel needed to be Locked and/or Tied on the American tow dolly.
