I've done both with the same towed behind the same MH. Frankly I like the dolly for less wear and tear on the towed driveline. I can hook and unhook in about the same time with either. Towing four down limits me to 65 mph and having to run the engine every 8 hours on the clock. I tend (or did till the late wife died) to run hard and long within limits. Plus there's the extra weight of a dolly. The KK-460 that I still have weighs about 650#'s and added to the old ODy's weight of at least 4,400#'s plus the inventory put us pretty close to the hitch limit of 6,000#'s.
Present rig has a 15,000# hitch and I'm towing a CR-V for about 3,700#'s using a RoadMaster Nighthawk, RoadMaster brackets and RoadMaster BrakeMaster 9160.

Funny story on putting miles on towed vehicles. A few times I've taken my towed vehicles into Discount TIre for rotate/balance. Each time a manager asked why I'm doing this after only 2500 miles (or whatever the odometer indicated)...and I explained those are odometer miles. The REAL miles are really 5000 miles...driven plus towed.

We typically drive about 70 mph on the freeways, going with the flow of whatever the truckers do. The Ford C-MAX (previous towed vehicle) has a 70 mph speed limit for towing, and run the engine every 6 hours. The F-150 has no speed limit for towing, and no need to run engine every X hours/miles.

My Chevy Sonic hatchback makes for a great 4-down toad. Both the automatic or manual transmission are towable. It weighs around 2,800 lbs. Made in the USA if it matters to you.
