Charge line

After towing my 2016 Cherokee Trail hawk over 40000 miles, I've experienced the dreaded death wobble. Decided to have Jeep wiring harness fix installed. I will be adding a charge line from the MH to the jeep. Question is it is safe to assume the ground path from the coach to the toad is the tow bar? Side question has anyone installed the harness yourself. Much of a job?

You should never rely on the hitch itself to supply a ground - there should be a ground line installed in every connector from the "tower" to the "towee"...

So to answer your question, No.

However, if you have been towing for 40k+ miles, I'll presume the pigtail that supplies your tail, brake, and blinker to your Trail Hawk has a ground already in place.

If you are capable enough to install this charge line, you should be ble to identify the ground line.

With regards to your EPS harness install. There are hundreds of pages to be found regarding this. I'm confident you will find folks in those threads willing to share their experience. Quick answer, yes it is a fairly involved job.

The toad does not use the tow bar as a ground. One of the wires in the connection between the two (whether 4, 5, 6, or 7 wire) is a ground on each end. That's the ground connection.

I'll bet there is a Jeep forum that will be able to knowledgeably answer your questions.

I had to install a seperate ground through the toad pigtail. And I didn't install a charge line initially and the Jeep was able to hold charge for multiple days of towing as long as the fuse for flat tow harness was pulled each day. I did install the flat tow harness myself. It isn't too hard. The supplied instructions are good. You have to remove the underhood fuse box to install some wires and the center console has to come out to install the CAN bus terminator in the rear...but again the instructions are very good. There are threads here on iRV2 regarding the install.

You will find talk about a relay install to automate the process of the underhood fuse install when connected to the coach....and I didn't do that initially to simplify the install. I later did add the relay so I don't have to open the hood in prep for towing. Good luck.

7 pin connector

Pin 4 is charge line, pin 1 is ground.
