Chipped (Smart) Keys

For use in a toad.

I need to leave a key in the ignition. And to be able to turn to ON position momentarily. But NOT start the car. Reason being a measure of anti-theft, versus leaving a fully functional key in it. This is with a tow dolly, there is no need to start the car once it is loaded to go. This is simply to allow the steering to be unlocked.

Has anyone done this for a Honda or Toyota? Can I just get a key cut, that doesn't have the expensive chip portion? Say just a metal key?

I'm sure I could get a regular chipped key cut, but not have it programmed to my car. Just wondering about saving a few bucks with a basic key. Your experiences welcomed.

A Honda dealer cut me a "lock out" key for $12.00. It will do everything except start the car.

Any lock smith can cut a non chip or chip key for you but just won't actavated the chip key without ownership proof.

I could find NO locksmiths in my area that could cut a Honda key. No dealer other than Honda would cut me a lock out key.

My wife travels with dogs and has a key that will start the car but won't let you drive it.

I went to Honda and bought a key....don't know what they call it, but it will do everything on my CRV, but allow it to run. It will turn the engine over, but not run. I do my warm up, per Honda, before towing and then swap out the key.

That's what I did years ago with our '05 Odyssey. It's a practice blank that the have to learn how to cut their keys without using the much pricier chipped key blanks.

The lock out key thing was a new concept to me as well until my most recent trip.
Went to a local lock and safe company, bam lock out key in hand.

If your tow dolly has the swiveling wheel pads, you don't need the ignition on either (steering wheel should remain locked). Master Tow does, and I think Stehl and Roadmaster too.

Not a Honda but...

I have one for my Smart Car toad. I bought the key off EBAY and the local ACE hardware store did the "serpentine" cut on the key for me.
