We have a 54 Merc with a C-6 Tranny. Have a tow dolly which allows us to take both car and golf cart with us.

However, we have been unable to find anyone/shop that can give us a solid answer as to whether or not you can tow a C-6 without a transmission disconnect.

Any thoughts, besides placing it on a trailer

Wishin2BFulltimers, welcome to iRV2.

Try calling REMCO TOWING.

They are the towing experts, and may be able to help if anyone can.

As far as I know you have to disconnect the driveshaft. Dirk, is correct that a call to Remco would be helpful. You can also unbolt the u-joint at the differential (not the transmission) and secure it up and out of the way under the car. If you do this make sure you mark the shaft and yoke so you bolt it back together with the same alignment as when you unbolted it to keep the driveshaft balance the same.

A C4 or C6 must have a pump to tow four down.

Thanks for the replies.

I called Remco, and I have to get them pics of the differential and go from there...they also asked to see the whole car

It is not towed or would not be towed 4 down, on a dolly instead.

Had thought of unbolting the U-Joint, but what a pain that can be, not too mention dirty at times.

Not that we would take this car all the time anyway, we have an 07 Pontiac GT G6 Hardtop Retractable that we take 99% of the time, but it sure would be nice to be able to load the Merc on from time to time.

Will let you know what Remco has to say, once I get down on the ground and back up again from taking the pics

Drifter-

As well this car is not all original (no kidding right)...

Has a chevelle front clip, a late model merc rear and a 351 windsor engine...so it gets confusing as to what needs to be done. I had thought that the later model C-6's were OK to tow, but would much rather be safe than replacing my tranny!

I absolutely refuse to "back it" on the dolly as several transmission shops have said to do. Just not safe in my non-professional opinion!

Sounds like a nice car. You should post some pics, here's a pic of one of ours.
