CRV Towing Question
How long would it be safe to stop without repeating the transmission prep. procedure? Obviously you don't need to do it when stopping for a stop sign. Obviously you do need to do it after stopping overnight. What about stopping for a one-hour rest break, though?
Thanks,
Paul

I think I remember reading that the procedure should be repeated every 6 hours, but not sure about that. We always do it when stopping for lunch!

Not sure about his, but for our year, Honda is silent on this question. The closest it comes is this:
"If you tow more than 8 hours in one
day, you should repeat the above
procedure at least every 8 hours
(when you stop for fuel, etc.)."
As we essentially never stop for long, and never drive 8 hours, for us it's a moot question. Interesting, mind you, but moot.

My SOP, is to follow the setup procedure to run thru gears and idle in N for 3-5 min at end of day, no matter how long the day. If we have an exceptionally long day, I will idle in N for about 5 min at a rest atop. We also have transmission serviced every year

We have towed our CRV for almost 12 hours one day, a long story, without any problems. That included a 5 hour layover when a friends coach had mechanical issues. Didn't think to restart the CRV. That was over 20,000 towed miles ago and lots more driven miles. Now if we go longer than about 5 hours, we do restart the CRV just for peace of mind.

Best advice is to read and follow the manual.
Start, run through gears returning to N from fwd gear and idle 5 min.
Do the above at START of day and again if towing more than 6-8 hrs a day.
I also follow severe duty schedule for trans & differential fluid replacement.

Thanks to everyone who answered! Since the owner's manual doesn't specifically address this issue, it sounds like "use your best judgement" is the way to go.

Later years must have clarified it as I always took it to be every 8 hours on the clock. But I never went that long on my '14 I used to have.

We’ve towed our 2013 CRV for about 30k miles. I have seldom redone the start procedures once on the road, no matter how long we stopped. Usually we might stop at a rest area for an hour or two, but I never bothered to redo the start procedure and have yet to have a problem. We usually try not not to drive more than 300 miles in a day, but we have done 500 miles several times.
CAVEAT…You need a charge line to keep the car battery charged. I killed my battery a couple times while towing, when I didn’t restart the car and run it for awhile. I installed a charge line and it hasn’t been a problem since. That CRV battery is laughable. It’s the size of a motorcycle battery.

The 2012 CR-V owner's manual (page 256) says "you should" repeat the procedure "at least" every eight hours (link here and copy below).
My reading says Honda does not care about sitting time, just rolling time.

Info I got when I had a CRV was that the trans fluid drained down at a known rate whether moving or parked and the tow procedure should be repeated every 6 to 8 hours. This was from a service manager and the info should be interpreted as to your trust of service managers, but it worked for me. I never went over 6 hours without repeating the set up.
Glenn
B52RNAV doing the procedure at the end of the day would seem to mean you would start out next morning with your drive time already exceeded, but again, the source.
