CRV wiring issues for towing

We had our Honda CRV wired for towing. Since then we have had continual issues with the battery dying. Just had a Honda mechanic tell us that the tow wiring was tied in to the positive cabling. Is that how it is normally done? Anyone else have this issue?

Nope.
What year?
But is it dying when towing and you have to leave the steering unlocked? If so there are two methods to stop it.
New battery and battery box from an Odyssey.
Run a charge line from the RV to the battery.
I did both with mine.

It is a 2013. No, it dies when unhooked. My husband removed the fuse, but still dies.

Strange! I've wired two Honda's, a 2005 Odyssey EXL and the present 2014 CR-V EXL with no problems. With the CR-V I bought it used and already setup but I found so much wrong with the installation that I redid it all. When I redid it I bought a unit that bypassed the diodes that most use. The original owner had a manual battery shut off installed (wrongly) that would loose it's connection which acted like a dead battery.

What does "wired for towing" mean? Just lights? Or lights and brake controller with boost pump?

If the brake controller was wired to stay on all the time it would drain that tiny CRV battery quickly if the vehicle was not running.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I installed a switch to bypass the accessory fuse that you are supposed to pull for towing. I also replaced the lawn mower battery with a larger one. Never had a problem since! Have fun and keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

We use magnetic lights pluged into RV. Towing socket. Works great. Brake buddy plugged into lighter socket. Always fill BB with car running. Battery is good for 6 hours of running without pulling fyse. Also carry a Halo jumper and regular pump and jumper just incase.[emoji322] [emoji21]

We also have a 13 CR V and had initial issues. Solved by the following:
1) New battery
2) Installed battery cut off switch - disable battery when being towed
3) Charge line to RV
4) We utilize a Brake Buddy and installed a dedicated 12 volt outlet wired directly to battery to plug in to.

Not had a single issue. These are simple fixes.....

My CRV battery kept dying when we towed it. I put in a switch to disconnect the fuse, but it didn't help. I installed a charging line from the coach, and that didn't help either. So, I finally just bought one of those lithium battery car jumper gizmos, and used it to jump the car when we would arrive at our destination. A year later, my wife took a look at the fuse box, and figured out I had been disconnecting the wrong fuse. I changed the switch to the right fuse, and no more trouble since.
