Does anyone lock their baseplate pins?

No need for locks because I routinely check my rigging before making a move. And I carry extra pins and even an extra pair of studs. This habit is a result of 35 years in the boilermaker trade as a rigger, high and/or heavy, as the sign in list at the hall says.

I use heavy duty split rings to secure the pins. They're more difficult for the casual troublemaker to remove. That being said, I always check all the connections before driving off.

Or you could use split cotter pins; that would filter out screwballs who don't walk around with pliers.

If you make the rings or pins more difficult to remove, the argument about being able to quickly separate the toad in case of fire goes away. You may as well just use locks.
Either way, you could just carry a bolt-cutter behind the driver seat.

I am so happy to hear all of your answers and stories about your experiences. I have now convinced hubby that locks are good. I looked at the blue ox set but I liked the pins that came with my roadmaster tow bar so I purchased the locks that replace the pins. They go through the holes nicely and are at an angle that is easy to unlock. I already had a keyed lock on the hitch to the motorhome so that is all set.
I now will feel a little better about going into a rest stop and not having some kid unhitch us. We do a walk around before leaving, always, but it's nice to know that we are a little safer now. I also purchased extra big pins, at hubby's suggestion just in case something happens to them.
Another thing I learned from this thread. I usually don't lock my car after putting it in neutral and releasing the brake. I will do this from now on after hearing that someone went into the car and put the the car into park so it was dragging..... I think everyone learned a lesson from this....it does happen to REAL people not to Bob's counsin's friend's mother's son...........

Happened to me about 12 years ago. My daughter got her 1st job out of college. I hooked up a U Haul trailer and moved her 3 hrs away. On my way back, I stopped at Taco Bell and went inside. Afterwards, I made it a couple of miles down the interstate and the trailer took off to the right thru a field. I was very luck that it came to rest in an open grass area and did not cause someone else to wreck. The pin was gone.....I had checked everything before starting the trip on both ends. I now have a locking pin and check everything every time I stop for any reason!!!

I have had the misfortune in that my toad caught on fire while we were towing it. Locking pins are wonderful when parked particularly over night or what might seem nefarious places, however during actual towing should something go wrong having to find your key or deal with some sort of combination to separate your toad from coach, you will revel in that one less step so I am for checking, not locking.
