Dolly Tow 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 automatic

Hello,
I just bought a used dolly to tow my new Jeep 4x4 automatic to find I cant do it. I can in tow bar but not dolly. Do I need to disconnect the rear drive shaft first? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Sorry to say, I just went thru the same ordeal last week. You can tow 4 down but not 2 up with out disconnecting the drive shaft. Something to do with internal lubrication.
I had to return the dolly and buy a tow bar. I could have dropped the drive shaft but didn't want the hassel. Mike

I'm afraid I can't help with your question. However; I have to ask - why tow on a dolly when four-down is so easy?? Of course, I'm assuming this is a Wrangler or similar which is super easy four-down. I guess there is the cost of the base plate and tow bar to consider. I'm super happy with my Wrangler four-down setup - probably less than 3 mins to connect/disconnect - very simple.

To dolly tow most modern Jeep 4x4's you must disconnect the rear drive shaft. If you don't, the transfer case will run dry (oil is moved by the front axle drive gear) and permanent damage will occur.

Sorry, that's why Jeeps are THE preferred Flat Tow dingy.

Thanks all. Yea i got a "deal" on the tow dolly. I should have done my homework. Probably going to have to sell it and do the 4 down.

I'm confused.......most of the time, but I tow my YJ wrangler 4 down with an np-231 transfer case. my front drive shaft does not turn when towing so the oil pump must be on rear of transfer case. Must be newer jeeps are different. I'll keep my old stuff.

If you have a transfer case and an automatic then the process is super simple. Flat towing a wrangler is easy, even a new one. Look in your manual for the recreational towing instructions. I think you'll see it is pretty easy.
