Dolly Tow AWD or 4WD

We currently use an American Car Dolly to tow several FWD vehicles behind our Monaco Knight 38PDQ.

We set it up for full-timing this year (1 KW of solar) and we want to purchase a used AWD or 4WD vehicle with decent ground clearance for scouting out BLM and forest preserve camp sites.

We're happy with the versatility of the dolly and do not want to purchase all the extra gear for flat towing. Nor do we want to have to modify a vehicle to flat tow.

Is anyone out there dolly towing an AWD or 4WD vehicle?

I don’t tow my Colorado on a dolly, but the owners manual does have a section on how it can be done. I did tow my prior Malibu on a dolly, which was FWD and capable for four down towing. It is possible to dolly tow with a true four wheel drive, but download the owners manual for any vehicle you are considering and make sure it can be dolly towed. Don’t rely on the salesman, they will tell you anything to make a sale. I have my doubts that any AWD can be dolly towed.

The Jeep manual will tell you NOT to tow on a dolly. That said, it can be done with certain transfer cases. The tc must have a 2wd position and must have a "slinger" driven by the rear output shaft to keep the bearings lubricated. I did it with a 2010 JKU Rubicon which has a 241 NP case. Of course, you can tow any AWD or 4wd Jeep on a dolly if you disconnect the rear driveshaft.
