Dolly towing a VW EOS
Hi all,
My wife and I are very interested in getting a 2008 VW EOS as a toad.
The used manual ones are not common and more expensive.
We are not full time and do about 5000miles a year.
Would I better waiting to see if I can get a manual one for flat towing?

We dolly towed a 2005 Jedda TDI and then a 2012 Passat TDI until this year when I switched to our Explorer and a tow bar. We had little trouble with the dolly and if that's the vehicle you want, I wouldn't worry about it.
The VWs were my wife's cars and my previous Explorers could not be flat towed.
Now you'll hear all sorts of hatred for dollys. Ignore.

The passat is a nice car. My wife has a 2013 CC awd which is really nice.
If we got the EOS it would be to use not just as a toad but as fun to drive car.

She loves her Passat! It's five years old and looks and runs like new. Of course being a diesel they want to trade her out of it but she's hanging on as long as she can. Eventually they will reprogram the engine to meet standards I guess, but for now it gets over 40 mpg and on trips over 50.
This is what we used to tow.

It comes drop shipped and you need to mount the wheels and fenders.

We had a diesel Audi a4 which is basically the same car, we often drove 700 miles between fill ups.

We towed a '05 Honda Odyssey for many thousands of miles on a KK-460. Still have it in fact.

We say pick the car YOU like.
If not flat towable, get a dolly...ignore the dolly haterz.
We have done both flat and dolly towing. Our dolly keeps the car up-high free from rock strikes and freeven of hidden miles on the driveline.
The choices for dolly are pivot pan or fixed frame...electric or surge brakes...fixed or removable ramps. All are pretty good, but ensure the dolly frame won't hit your car's fascia and/or under door skirt.
We have the Acme Eze-Tow. It's affordable, very light weight, and very easy to use. And, is the only dolly that can be stored out of the way, upright against a garage wall.
The totally automatic and infinitely auto-adjustable Disc surge brakes are available - once only an Acme option. Now many dolly makers have seen the wisdom and copied.

Hi Scarab,
I like the idea of the EZ as it will easily stow at my rv storage and in state parks.
I need to figure out if the EOS has a steering lock.

Most VWs do.

It's just like flat towing...but, unlocking the steering is only required for the Eze-Tow or other fixed frame dolly.
All pivot pan dollies can have the steering locked, but usually the wheel straps prevent the steering from turning to the lock.
Usually any key (like the valet key or a blank) left in the keyhole will hold the lock open with the ignition in the off position.
This is easy to check...just follow shut down as normal, and stop along the way to see when any steering lock engages.
Best luck

Thanks Scarab,
I will watch out for that.
