Flat tow 2dr 2008 Wrangler ??

I need your advise with my jeep. I put the transfer case in neutral and yhe 6spd in neutral, key out of the ignition. Does this sound correct? My manual only says to put the transfer case in neutral, nothing further.

What about the ignition key and steering?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Transfer case in neutral, manual trans in 2nd or 3rd, auto trans in neutral, key on just far enough to allow the steering wheel lock to disengage but not turn on the dash idiot lights.

Sorry, that's not correct. The auto transmission goes back in Park with the transfer case in neutral.

With a 2008 Wrangler, you need to see if you have a steering lock. Jeep made a change during that year and some '08s have steering lock and others don't. With the key off, see if you can turn the wheel. If it doesn't lock, then you don't have to leave the key in the ignition. If it does you have to leave the key in acc or there are instructions on some of the Jeep forums on how to defeat the lock.

Here are the steps from the '08 manual:
1. Depress brake pedal.
2. Shift automatic transmission into NEUTRAL or depress
clutch pedal on manual transmission.
3. Shift transfer case lever into N (Neutral).
4. Start engine.
5. Shift automatic transmission into DRIVE or manual
transmission into gear.
6. Release brake pedal and ensure that there is no vehicle
movement.
7. Shut the engine off and place the ignition key into the
ACC position.
8. Shift automatic transmission into PARK.
9. Apply parking brake.
10. Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle with tow bar.
11. Release parking brake.
12. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and secure it
away from the negative battery post.

Great thanks. Mine does not lock. What is the purpose of the 6 spd being in 2nd or 3rd?

You are correct, auto trans in park.
In my defense, 50 some years of owning Jeeps and never owned an automatic trans version. Not my thing....

Be very sure the steering wheel is unlocked. I tie a white sock at the top of the wheel to insure it is. Shows up great in the camera.

The manual transmissions rely on splash lubrication from the cluster shaft, located in the bottom of the trans, submerged in the gearlube.
The trans main shaft and all forward gears, shift hubs and synchros, connected to the transfer case thru the ouput shaft can spin without getting splash lube to them...even with the transfer case in neutral. Putting the trans in gear prevents that from happening.
That said, I have forgot to put the trans in gear before with no ill effects, but it was a short trip.

Same reason as the auto trans in park. It keeps the transmission from turning just by fluid friction from the transfer case.

Not a Jeep owner so I can't add much except maybe it would be very convenient to get a battery disconnect switch for the negative cable. They're less than $10 as I recall and it' becomes a 2 minute process instead of a 5 or more minute process and you don't need any tools. Here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Termi...kle_mcd_asin_0

Good luck.
