Flat-Tow or Dolly...?

We sold both Truck and Jayco 5th wheel , and will purchase our first diesel pusher. We found an 03 Monaco Signature 42, and now need a Jeep to tow . Looking at 2013-2015 model Wrangler Unlimiteds. I see most Jeeps being flat-towed more than a tow dolly. Any issues on towing a Jeep that I should be aware of... any advice appreciated.

Most 4 wheel drive Jeeps can not be dolly towed, as the transfer case needs to have all tires turning at close to the same speed. Meaning either all 4 on the ground spinning, or all 4 stopped on a trailer.

When Looking at the Jeep’s be sure it has quadratrack II 4 wheel drive I believe that is the one with the neutral option on the transfer case, some do not.

4 down way better than a dolly IMHO.

We just went from a dolly to 4-down. Much less overhead to hook up and detach the toad now. Plus, there's no need to move the dolly around to find a place for it, no dolly bearings or tires to worry about, and the tow bar weighs a whole lot less than the dolly did.

We dolly because I refused to buy another car that could be towed.

But ....

By all means, if the Jeep can be towed 4-down do it that way. I've seen Jeeps on dollies and couldn't figure out why.

Well, the advice is much appreciated. I purchased a ‘15 Wrangler Unlimited Sport, really like it so far. Sold my ‘01 Sahara yesterday, hated to see that one go. But, next chapter..... will flat-tow this rig. I know a 62 yo man that still likes his toys, and this one is lifted with 35” Nitto . My question is.... Blue Ox or Roadmaster? They seem to be the 2 popular ones.

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I didn't want a big bulky type tow bar on the front when we weren't pulling it so I opted for the Blue Ox which has the removable receivers. Unless you really look you can't hardly see the tow bar hidden under the front bumper cover.

In your case you may look at a front bumper with the hookups integrated into the bumper.

Went with the Blue Ox tow bar, I actually bought a used one and it has held up well.

You will have to decide on a brake system. When I bought my coach it already had an air quick connect. I decided to go with the Roadmaster Brakemaster 9100 series system with Brakeaway. I briefly looked at the Airforce One but I have the 5.7L Hemi and I didn't see an easy way to install.

Jeep Wranglers are towed 4 wheel down. There is no option to dolly tow unless you want to ruin your Jeep.

The only real issue is the type of towed vehicle--generically, 4-down vs dolly is like Ford Vs Chevy--neither side of the "argument" is likely to concede the other way is better--so be it! You have a Jeep--best possible tow solution for a guy who likes his toys--I know I like mine! Only question might be that 4-down towing is "harder" on the front towed tires--suspect its why some high-end Jeep owners with pricy tires will trailer their rigs to the trail head.....

My 2017 Jeep Renegade was front wheel drive only. Had to be dolly towed.

My new to me 2007 Jeep is also front wheel drive, dolly only.

I now dolly tow a 2019 Honda Ridgeline 4 door pickup. Lots of storage space. Its front wheel drive.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

"Front wheel drive only"--thought we were talking about towing "real" Jeeps? [smile]

"Real Jeeps" stopped existing when Chrysler bought the brand from AMC.

From my personal experience
Year - 1999
Get a TOW BAR

The day I bought my tow dolly was the first day I was selling it
One trip, just one trip and I had it with a tow dolly.
Waste of money

Jeep really screwed up lately
Back in 2004 every single Jeep model was towable.
Now, basically the Wrangler is the only easy Jeep that can be towed 4 down
The other ones have that goofy electronic transfer case.
That’s why I’m keeping my 04 Liberty as long as I can
Set up takes 3 minutes.
